Clay for springtail culture, and potentially other things

Hi everyone,

I’ve browsed this board frequently for a long time, and recently became interested in starting a new springtail culture after reading through a thread by the member Pumilo.

I mostly deal in terrariums, smaller ones usually. So sourcing the ingredients to mix up what would be a fairly minuscule amount of clay for my purposes seems like overkill.

Would sourcing the ingredients and mixing up clay and using it in my substrate for terrariums provide a benefit that would be worth the effort of mixing up clay and storing excess ingredients?

Thanks,
Finick

I wouldn't mix clay into nearly any substrate and then simply hydrate. I would read the thread again closely, and I think you will have a better idea of the theory. It takes some work but has allegedly had good results in avoiding some historic husbandry problems.

If you are just building small terrariums with no inhabitants, I would personally avoid a clay amendment all together. There are many equally successful medias for caring for plants.
