My fruit fly cultures are turning yellow. I'm using new cups. Could it be oil from the cups? Is it harmful? I just set up the cultures on friday.

Should I toss the cultures I just made on friday? (all my other cultures seem to be fine including the culture I took the flies from). Could it be in the cups I just bought?

Now I have this blue green stuff in one of them! Is that mold?!

I added nothing to the mix (Ed's stuff).

Where is this coming from (new cups? new flies I just bought online? Somewhere else?)

Try using 50/50 water vinegar... or straight vinegar. Straight vinegar works great (for melanogaster)... just cost more money.

The spores are airborne... would not do much good finding the source...

I have seen yellow, blue, and green all appear in ff containers when I have used papertowels in them. It doesn't happen all the time, but does pop up from time to time. It never caused any real harm to the culture or other cultures, and they produced just fine. I would keep the culture, and if you are worried about it just move it away from your other cultures.
