Now this might be a weird thing to ask, but... anyone know what kind of wood this is? I got it at a chain pet store as "driftwood". All Living Things brand... it's heavy and sinks in water.

After reading about how Grape wood will mold away in moist conditions, I'm concerned I may have a bad piece of wood on my hands... really hoping to use it since it's got such a cool shape.

This looks like grapewood but grapewood is usually not dense enough to sink when dry. Grapewood will grow mold - but it eventually subsides - and I think this is more a function of the wood being fresh (and hence having nutrients in its surface that feed mold) than anything inherent in grapewood itself. I had a piece in an aquarium that initially did grow a coating of mold - but this disappeared after a couple of weeks and then the wood looked good and lasted for years...
