Every time I mix up some new cultures at least three of them become sour and begin giving off a really disgusting smell; does anyone know why this happens? Also the culture mix I use is purchased from a company not home made.

are you using yeast? If so, how much? In my experience, my cultures will put off a foul odor for a few days. Once the instars (larva) start processsing the medium, the foul smell is eliminated and the meddium seems to take on a slight, sweet smell. My suggestion would be to watch for mold and discard any that have black mold growing in them.

I'm buying medium from saurian.net at the moment. It never seems to mold or go bad, so I'm satisfied with it.
