I bought a vanilla orchid a while ago and decided it was too big for the viv so i put the root structure in a bag with some spanish moss and it was growing very well. The other day though, i noticed that the roots had gone all mushy and the vine is turning black and dieing up the vine from the root.

It has aireal roots and i was thinking about cutting it just above where it is dieing but i dont know if thats a good idea. What should i do?

That is your best chance at saving it. Take your cutting an plant it in a mix of fine fir bark and sphagnum, in a clay orchid pot. The key here is good dranage as Vanilla is very susceptable to soil pathogens that just love a poorly drained mix.
