In a recent thread on Dendroworld, there was a claim that replacing orange juice with water reduced the smell of Drosophila cultures. I've been testing this and now I have the results.

I can see no difference in the smell of cultures with or without OJ. That is, some cultures smell worse than others, but this doesn't seem to be controlled by juice/water. How wet the culture is seems to be a more important factor. What I do see is that cultures with water rather than OJ produce noticeably fewer flies, so I'm sticking with the original OJ recipe.
