I'm just getting into this. I understand its best to put something like ceramic beads (for hydroponics) under the coconut fiber. How about terra cotta pellets? My local nursery type of store has that, and I don't feel like going across town for an actual hydroponics store.

the point of using hydroton (LECA) is that its LIGHT expanded clay aggregate. you could use many different things and get a similar effect, but few will be as light (weight wise) as the LECA.

should work just fine but it will be way lighter and easier on yourself if you ever move the tank to use leca. and its cheap from hydro stores.

Thanks to those who answered. I looked in my local nursery store, but their terra cotta pellets were huge! I don't know if anyone else has seen smaller pellets, but I will not be using them.
