Temps for Dendro. Azureus

2448 Views 32 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  Dartolution
I have a 20long that has been set up for about 8 months now and I feel as though I am ready to put a couple frogs in it finally.

So other than going ahead and getting Springtail and FF cultures going.
I was thinking about either a single Dendrobates Tinctorius "Azureus" or a pair.

is this tank size acceptable?

Also the temperature is a concern.

It drops down to about 68 at night and 73 during the day as a high.

is this too cool?

Its a very basic little viv with no fans in it I was hoping to install a small fan somehow just havent yet.

other than that what do you guys think?

heres a picture or two.

Those temps are fine, the size is good, and it looks ready for a frog or two! Just get fruit fly culturing down and you should be good to go.
Good luck,
Bryan

Thanks guys!
It's one of the first. The big tank behind it is a work in progress.

I wanted both springtails and fruit flys for variety for them.

Also, what about ventilation? Is that critical?

And... I have those grey mushrooms pop up constantly and increasing in number! This last bloom a few days ago was around 15.
Is this normal?/okay?
Mushrooms are fine. They add character :D

Lots of folks don't ventilate. Just make sure you open the lid from time to time. :p
Oh I do that daily!
Just was worried about air movement and temperature mainly.
They have plenty of hiding places in the back corners and under plants if need be.
And there is a thin (1-2leaves deep) leaf litter that I collected locally and have boiled and cleaned which had been in there for at least 6 months as well.

I do believe I had some sort of bugs in there at one point before I recently used dry ice to fertilize the plants a little.
They were white and small and jumped a lot. Normally stayed around the base of the bromeliad and the dead mushrooms. I would say they were some species of springtails but ... I killed them all in the gas treatment :-(
Looks like you are off to a great start :)
It looks great and nice shrooms :D
I wish I was that lucky to have some shrooms pop up.
Wonder where they came from lol cause I want some to pop up in my viv.
I never had any luck with fittonia. I hope you have better luck than I did lol and purple waffle plants are awesome and grow pretty fast.

Check out these fans Todd has.http://www.dendroboard.com/forum/sponsor-classifieds/77041-air-circulation-new-year.html
They look pretty neat. Plus no wiring or anything just slap some screen on it and you are good to go.
You could throw some silicone and cocofiber on them to help it blend in.
Pointing the tip towards the front glass should keep the front's condensation down so you can have a clear view.

Can't wait to see the frogs you pick. Take care :)

Thanks Brandon the fittonia had been growing fine for the past 6 or 8 months.
Other than recently being burned a little from the new lighting .

You can try grabbing a mushroom cap from outside and putting it in your tank. that ought to seed it. of course it may bre too cool where you live right now.

yeah fittonias get burned really easy....that's the main reason I have never had luck with them. They leaves always start looking like crap and I can't stand it so I pull them lol.
They might be fine in my viv since it is a vert but in my other vivs they burnt just under a reg florescent grow bulb and a 5.0 full spectrum florescent. They were your reg horizontal type vivs and closer to the lights. I just don't feel like fooling with them anymore lol.

Good luck with them :)

I see them every once in a while.
I am a bit weary tho of bringing stuff from outside into my viv tho.
Afraid I am gonna wind up bringing parasites in and I'm not sure if a bleach dip would get up in those slits under the mushroom cap.
My springtails would enjoy that mushroom lol and eat it up.
I'm new but I'd say springtails = no mushrooms
And I wouldn't bring a shroom from outside in either. Plus, a bleach dip with probably kill/wash away the spores anyway wouldn't it?

Yes, a lot don't ventilate but by doing so we also remove the ability from the frogs to regulate thier body temperatures via evaporative cooling.. the region where azureus originates gets a lot warmer than 75 F.. The reason that people tend to recommend a lower temperature is because the enclosures are closed up, the frogs can't phyisologically respond to the temperature changes.

Yikes!
So a small fan even with these cooler temperatures would be beneficial?

a fan might drop your temps down. With them already at 72 I would look into lighting that may put off more heat maybe or idk if putting a heat mat underneath would help. Might help some and make the water that evaporates warmer.
What is your temp in the house?
What type of lighting do you have?
I want to get LEDs but I am afraid it would drop my temps down too much so I keep the ones I have cause the temps are ideal.
I live in the basement of a bilevel home. So the temps in the basement are the same.
Lighting is not exclusive to the 20L
It's a retrofit fixture mounted from the ceiling.
(4) 46" T5 HO BULBS (3) 6500k and (1) 4500k ran on an ICECAP 660 ballast suspended about 3 feet above everything.
Since its winter I have to move everything I can inside which means all my palms, crotons, orchids, broms, etc come inside.

LED's are powerful when done correctly.
But if your worried about temperature why not just stay with T5's ?

If anything I suppose I should get a small heat mat

A small fan will help with internal air circulation which can make you a little more successful with some plants like orchids that in general do not like stagnent conditions.

I wouldn't worry about the temperature unless it is going to get over 85 F. This gives you the idea of the conditions of the area where azureus is located http://www.sipaliwinisavanna.com/docs/vegetation_sipaliwini_savanna.pdf

sounds like a good light setup.
If you drop it down more it would raise your temps if a fan does change anything.
nah I am running just two 26w 2600k CFLs.

Did you check out those fans Todd is selling?
Brandon there is so much PAR produced by my current setup if I drop it any lower I might as well be growing these plants on the surface of mercury. They are still getting slightly burned when it's 3 feet away and taken a month and a half to get them up to 8 hrs daily. Haha

Your current spectrum isnt incredibly conducive to plant growth.

Not sure what you mean by fans Todd is selling :-/
