Super pig

My first post, but just wondering who feeds repashy super pig to their dart frogs and how do you feed it? Do you mix it in with the vitamin dust? Or dust the flies with just the super pig and how often? I dust repashy calcium plus with every feeding.

thanks for your input

All you need to use is Repashy Calcium Plus. You don't need to use SuperPig on top of that.
I add it into the cup with the calcium plus. I probably use it once a week. What frogs do you keep that you want to use it for? I've noticed improved color with my benedicta, but if I didn't have red or orange frogs I wouldn't waste my money on it.

I just want to give my my frogs the best nutrition I can since they only eat flys and springtails.

Yeah I don't know that using super pig adds anything to the health of the frog. It definitely doesn't hurt it, but it's really used to bring out the reds and oranges that are dulled out in captivity.

Thanks for the reply and info what’s your thoughts on repashy vit A? Since it it also an ingredient in calc plus.

I only use vitamin A for breeding frogs, once a month, during breeding season. It's definitely not needed. I actually forgot to use it this month, and my eggs look good. So I may be skipping it from now on.

I use it occasionally, but Calcium Plus has some in it as well. I also use it in my fruit fly cultures, but the benefits there are anecdotal at best.

I use it quite a bit on juvenile fire bellied toads, as it does help with their colouration. I haven't noticed any different with any Ranitomeya or large Oophaga in regards to colouration though.

That said carotenoids do play a role in general health, including metabolizing Vitamin A, so it doesn't hurt to dust in occasionally.

I do the same as Jason and mix it into some Cal + when I dust it.

There is some support for benefits to dart frogs beyond coloration from adding carotenoids to FF media.

tested it on 3 different Ranitomeya Species, did not make a difference.
Would love too test it on amereega silverstonei, but never got the chance.

This for sure!

Ime , I've gotten larger and more viable clutches (double the size) + overall more offspring from my Oophaga (and all other frogs) ever since adding super pig to my supplement rotation.

more recent (last +-3years?) I've been using @Johanovich 's 'redesigned' superpig, which containts ingredients that have way more red pigment (superpig is more heavy on the yellows), and the colors on my Bastimentos offsping (and some of the f1 that lost color over time got) exactly the same as my import frogs and the ones I've seen in the wild.

So I'd highly recommend repashy superpig for all of itns benefits and even more Johan's take on the product if that is possible.

Would probably make the Silverstonei more yellowish orange due to the contents of the product rather than red.

Could you say more about the products and scheduling in the rotation, and also which species of frogs you've seen these results with? Thanks. :)

It's pretty standard
Repashy cal + every feed
VitA + and Superpig once a month.
It's for all the frogs in my collection ;
Different morphs of Tinctorius, Oophagas and Phyllobates Terribilis.

One word of caution for folks to be aware of (though this doesn't apply directly to what you are doing, @Tijl ) there is some suggestion that dosing vitamin A and precursors directly to tads may not be optimal. That said, this appears to be a preprint, so take it with the appropriate level of caution. My point is simply that though carotenoids do show some positive benefits, they are not a panacea. That and I love research! 🤪

I keep a lot of Ranitomeya and don't notice any colouration difference - they also don't lose their red colouration the same way many Oohpaga do, which leads me to believe they have a different ways of producing colour.

I wonder if Super Pig could be added to Bug Burger or Cricket Load ? I see that you use it for your juvenile FBT's and was curious about whether it's used on just fruit flies or crickets as well.

It probably could, but I have never tried.

Superpig works well on my Panther Chameleons, I've never seen a noticeable difference with frogs. As mentioned above, Calcium plus contains it, and even if not just for color carotenoids are valuable nutrients. I dust just like Socratic mentions with one difference: I dust with Repashy supervite once a month too, to give a wider spectrum of vitamins.
