Sphagnum moss that doesn't go moldy

289 Views 8 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Harpspiel
I've been propogating some plants for a while in small plastic boxes but I've noticed a real differece in sphagnum mosses and how some seem to go moldy and others don't. Their conditions are the same and I feel as though it might have something to do with other organic material that is shredded with the moss.

Does anyone have some good recommendations for sphagnum moss (preferably in a brick form, not fresh) that don't seem to go moldy? Or is it better to just get fresh moss?

Besgrow Spagmoss is the highest quality imo. I don’t always use that high of quality for my growout bins, but it’s definitely worth it when you need quality. In general New Zealand >> Chilean sphagnum.

I agree about the Besgrow. But are you sure that what you are using is sphagnum moss? There are a number of dried mosses sold for terrariums, and any of them other than sphagnum will mold almost immediately. Are you sure it's mold? Sphagnum will turn green with algae, which usually isn't harmful in a grow bin. And last, what are your setups like? If they're molding, they could be a little too wet. Do they have any ventilation? Pictures might help.

Besgrow is great stuff, but overall I would not expect any dried long fiber sphagnum to mold in a grow bin, unless some other conditions were conducive to that.

I've never had sphagnum mold in any of my grow bins or grow-out bins. Sometimes in my planted tanks the sphagnum will turn into living sphagnum moss, but never mold.
Besgrow > south america grown moss > canadian grown moss > Wisconsin grown moss (saw spag for sale at the local big box garden center = mosser lee absolute garbage :( ).

I buy Besgrow if I want the "good stuff" and Bettergrow if I want the "cheap stuff". And I bake either one before using it (microwaving should also work).
(microwaving should also work).
Be careful microwaving anything organic and dry! I made my kitchen smell like a campfire a couple weeks ago when I microwaved some wood and it started charring and smoking.

ah let me specify that I soak the sphagnum first. Microwaving doesn't work on drystuff well anyway.
I've mainly just been using Exo Terra and Komodo moss bricks (from UK), but I'm starting to think from the zero recommendations that maybe they're no so great haha. Both are quite dense and bitty when expanded. Bought some besgrow.

My prop box conditions & humidity are effectively identical across different tubs, but there is a noticeable difference. I use about 6-7 different types but most of these have come with plant orders so I don't know where most of these come from, I just never have problems with them.

Do you mean Exo Terra Forest Moss? Because I haven’t seen an Exo Terra sphagnum moss product…
