In my experience they are impossible to sex visually the male does have a very loud call almost like a small dog. I currently have three golden morph none of which are particularly plump(at least not by dart standards) Yet I am convinced that all three are females since I get eggs every couple of weeks, but no sign of embryo development and I have yet to hear a call, even after keeping them for almost three years.Im going to order one tomorrow, the goldens are too much for me ($215) so im going to get the tan/brown morph, how does one sex them?
Then I'll have to look hard!Yes,but they are veeerrrry hard to spot
ya,dont step on them,I remember when i was in the rainforest I almost stepped on a horny toadThen I'll have to look hard!![]()
I ordered some WC's a few years ago. They only lived maybe a week or so.In my experience they are impossible to sex visually the male does have a very loud call almost like a small dog. WCs used to come in fairly stressed, dehydrated and parasitized, although lately collection and shipping from that area has improved greatly. I keep mine in a 20 gallon long tank with a sand/coconut husk mix substrate and a heavy planting of Pothos. Temps can and have reached the high 80's in the tank with no ill effects. I suspect that the key with these frogs is starting with healthy specimens and then keeping them with very little day/night temp variation and humidity of close to 100%( The Solomon Islands are notorious for being hot and humid day and night, as our troops found out the hard way during the Guadalcanal campaign)I ordered some WC's a few years ago. They only lived maybe a week or so.I think I cooked them (I've heard to keep them at moderate temps, "cool" actually). Anyways, they didn't move very much, as in really at all.
Seriously, they would stay in literally the same position for days. I remember they ate, but I'm wondering if I had really sick animals, or is this behavior just standard? Thanks! JVK
Jesse,I wish I could find them in something other than the "yellow morph." It's nice and all, but I like the really "lichen" colored individuals etc. Mine were pretty much tan-colored. There's a thread on TTTF right now, Kimix rounds up some nice images of various colorations in the species. JVK
New Eyelash Frog - talk to the frog
PS Mine were in a 20 with 3-4" leaf litter, substrate, cork background, screen top/ceran wrap that I fiddled with trying to get some behavior, feeding, activity etc. We had a really hot week that seemed to correspond with their death, if I remember correctly. JVK
