I've got some slate tiles from Home Depot, and I want to break them up into more naturalistic forms like I've seen posted here. For those of you that have done it, what's the best way to get usable pieces? Just take a sledgehammer and wail the heck out of them, or is there a specific way it should be done?

if you want to get random shapes, just drop it out of a second story window onto concrete, or use a sledgehammer.

if you need to shape those shapes, get a rock chisel and score a line where you want to break it and then snap it like you would glass (cept you will probably need to use a hammer)

And if its thick you can even split it down the isnide to double it! But thats if you want it to cover more area, maybe to divide a water area and land. Dont bother with that part for a waterfall.

id also tap the edges of the slate to take of any sharp bits, slate can be really sharp, especially when freshly broken.
