I'm new but have one question, and rather than bother you with personal details I'll just get to the point.

If you could have a rack of shelves for your frog rooms for which to place the vivariums on would full extension shelves be a benefit or a hindrance?

To better make a picture of words many use the metal wire shelving. This rack has single shelves each shelf can have 3-5 vivariums on the shelf. Would the ability to pull one shelf out like a drawer, giving you complete access to the top be good or bad. Logistics of wires and plumbing aside.

Just because no one has it doesn't mean no one wants it.

I was talking about full rows, if you did individual cages the expense would be very high. The mechanics are already finished conceptually. I can support a 55 gal tank full of water on a full extension drawer. The question was would it benefit anyone.

Let me ask it another way. Have you ever been working on an enclosure and wished the shelf it was sitting on pulled out so as to gain full access to the top and behind without having to pickup the enclosure and re-locate it else where?

I suppose this invariable leads to another question. Would having a small pull out shelf under each enclosure be a benefit to anyone?

This thread has quite a number of views but only one response. I just want opinions people good, bad, pc or harsh all opinions help in one form or the other. I can tell you in my experience with reptiles having the ability to slide a cage out of the stack to remove or service behind the unit is something I like. That doesn't mean others do, which is why I am asking the question.

I am a builder that is my hobby, in carpentry you take raw material and work it into an assembly of parts someone would enjoy. I also enjoy keeping exotics. It is in my nature to improve everything, leave it better than you got it so to speak. I'm constantly designing enclosures and racks. There are no perfect enclosures, however I continue to strive to make one. I've had failures, most due to the materials used but others where a true design flaw. Some where genius ideas but the cost of quality materials to make them work is counter productive.

I'm not asking for a critic on how to do it, just if I do it. Think of it as a pair of Levi's, I'm not asking you how to make them, just if you want them. But like Levi's sometimes people don't know they want them till they were made.

ALTHOUGH, I have all front opening tanks, so no reason to ever need access to the top of my tank. It wouldn't benefit me at all.

I'm on the fence regarding that right now.

I can get the zoo-med units in town but not the exo-terra. Although I have a trip to SoCal coming up I may just pick up a order at LLL.

I'm hesitant to go with the zoo-med units because I'd like to start with Tincs or Luecs and they don't have a terrestrial enclosure. My other issue is fly proofing.

I've also considered horizontal 40 gal breeders with a DIY horizontal kit. So as to have a front opening but terrestrial. Lastly I'm considering euro style vivs and just make the size I want.

They already make racks that can do this. Petco uses them in their reptile displays. Just visit your local one and check it out if you wanted to get some ideas on the hardware they used.

The closest Petco is 5+ hrs away.

I know they make them/how to make them, the question is... o forget it this thread is pointless....

I agree and that was the intent.

However I really and truly despise vertical access. When I started in reptiles decades ago and fish it was the one aspect I couldn't stand.

Obviously front opening fish tanks isn't a possibility, although that's what they said about the ejection seat on helicopters. Perhaps the screen door on a sub is in the works...

Anyways I do see it as an advantage myself even if I only pull the shelf out once in a year it's an advantage. I mean people pay insurance every month and how many have ever had a claim. Sometimes you can't predict every need.

I am leaning towards vertical 20's or zoo-meds myself, perhaps I'll get ambitious and build a Euro style viv. So I don't know what I'll do at this point.

When it comes down to it I'd like an organized room and still have a varied collection. I have to consider caging for GTP's, Cresties, and Darts (to include thumbs). With some many cage needs I'm trying to work out dual purpose units. IE vertical enclosure will work for thumbs and Cresties. GTP's have there own needs.

Really I don't want to build a great viv and have nothing to put in it but plants...I suppose that is cool to though.
