In several photos I've seen on this site, the bromeliads appear to be mounted without pots. In fact, they appear as if they're not attached to anything. This picture from the Vert 101 thread is a perfect example:




How exactly does one mount the plant like that? Moreover, does it require any extra special care to maintain?

They stuck the stolon in a crevice on the piece of wood.
People often stick the end of the brom stolon (the dead, woody piece on a brom pup) into their backgrounds or holes in wood. It will start to root in this way without a pot.

usually they are suspended in some way (or, like earthfrog said, stuffed into a crack) until the roots are welly developed. they live on trees in the wild, so they should support themselves after a while...
