You did the right thing IMO. The seller will have more incentive to work with you if they don't already have a negative public review from you, plus things happen during shipping that the vendor has no control over (especially during the coldest and hottest months).Recently had a pretty terrible experience with a largely known online dealer. Plants all came in terrible shape and microfauna was nearly all dead in several cultures. I was pretty steamed at first and wanted to write a bad review but after Contacting the Seller FIRST he ended up making it right and I was pretty satisfied with replacements for most of the dead.
Pays to be patient because most of the time people want to do a good job for their customers.
