Plastic coated paper clips. they should be like $1 for a box of them and a single large papaer clip should be able to be cut into atleast 3 plant staples.

When you mount the plant onto the background, dont forget to make a little bed of long fiber sphagnum for it so that it wont dry out as easily.

When you cut the paper clips doesn't it expose the metal? How much of a concern is this?

I just planted a 29 gal. I used toothpicks to mount my broms and other plants. All I do is push the toothpicks into the background and they make and x shape. the plant just rest on the toothpicks. There are pics somewhere on DB that show how to use the toothpick method.

Well I wouldn't worry too much about pointy objects. Plenty of spiked broms and haven't heard from anybody that the frog got hurt. I agree using stainless steel sharp edges just press into the GS. I've used toothpicks in my past and they work also. It's all about preferences. Experiment and see what you like.
