I've heard some references in posts on this board about adding paprika to FF culture media. I googled up some guy's experiment where he got better longevity in his cultures (if I interpret his experiment right) by supplementing with paprika http://www.cryonet.org/cgi-bin/dsp.cgi?msg=8980.

Has anyone had any experience with this? Also, is the paprika just for the flies, or is it for the frogs?

Its for making the yellow more vibrant in the frogs, i think it would do the same with red.

Like Ryan said, the paprika is for the coloration of the frogs. It brightens up yellows, oranges, and reds.

Don't mean to hijack, but I already put spirulina in my cultures for the green in my auratus. Would it hurt to add paprika ALSO for my tincs and vents....in the same cultures?

I don't think it would hurt the cultures, but to be safe just test it with a couple cultures and keep some as you normaly do them. This way, if they do crash you will still have food.

Whenever I have added spirulina to my cultures is has shortened their lifespan. The ones with Parika seem to do a little better then the normal ones (plain ff medium)... but I am not 100% sure of this. I would like to test this one day, but who has the time .

Are you mixing the paprika in or just a little on the top?

I add some paprika to the culture cup, then add in the dry medium, then add the vinegar water, and then I mix it together. So it is mixed into the medium, not just sprinkled on the top.
