I got a Hedera helix "My Heart" with a Cryptanthus bivittatus yestarday. Are they alright to use in a vivarium? Is the Cryptanthus bivittatus an air plant or does it have to be planted in soil? Will the Ivy do okay planted in bed a beast or a jungle mix type substrate?

Thanks,
Tom

Tom,

Both are ok for the terrarium. I am not sure that the hedera will do well if it's not planted in soil, but they are viners and may be able to survive on just the humidity and trace minerals. The cryptanthus is a terrestrial bromeliad, but it can be used as a "air plant" in the terrarium. They will just grow really long roots that "search" for the soil. I personally think they do better planted in soil.
