I live in sunny south Florida, and broms and other tropicals grow all over the place. My friend has a killer yard that I got some stuff from- from orchids to perennials to broms, and he doesn't know any of the names, so I would like ID's on them if possible. Also, if you know whether or not they will do well in a viv, and where I should plant them. TIA

Just to add to the above list...

1. the two broms after the ball moss (pic 4) look like Neoregelias,
2. the orchid in the basket looks to me like a Cattleya hybrid,
3. the next orchid mounted to what looks like tree fern is most probably a nice piece of Dendrobium aggregatum,
4. the orchid in the third picture of the second post is either a member of the Vanda alliance or a tolumnia species or hybrid
5. the orchid in the 5th picture second post is most likely Encyclia tampensis, a Florida native
6. the last picture looks like an Anthurium to me

The Neos would definitely do well in a viv. I would say most of the orchids would do better outside of vivs because most of these need more light/ air circulation than can be provided in a tank. These should all do well outdoors in Florida though. The Cattleya and Encyclia are both considered moderate to high light orchids. The Dendrobium needs moderate light and this one also needs a drier cooler winter to initiate flowering.

How large is the plant I thought was a Vanda relative/ Tolumnia? Also, does the individual leaf form a "V" when you look at the leaf from tip to the plant's stem or is it flat?

I will most likely leave most of the orchids out of the viv, but I still wanted to know what they were so thank you!

Here are a couple questions I have:

1. the spider plants....How would they do in a viv. I have so many of them, and I think they look awesome. Should I put them in soil or just wire them to the background?

2. The broms- Should I put them in soil? Most of them are in the small clay pots incorporated in my background. What type of soil is good to use?

3. The dracenae and wandering jews- Are they both suitable to be planted into the substrate?

4. Ball Moss- This is local and it looks great- How would it do?

So anyways, since I had all the plants together, I gave them a 20 min. bleach bath and then rinsed and dechlorinated. I went ahead and planted most of them in my viv, but I hope they all do good, and I'm not sure if I planted them all in proper places or if they would even survive. Here are some pics of my viv planted. Please criticize and give me advice! Thanks again.


Also, the last two pics are other UI's that need to be identified if possible, and how well they would do in this viv. My viv is already seeded, and my LPS just got powder blues and azeurus in after 2 months of waiting, so i'm hoping to get the ball rolling soon.

yes, but the dracaena will get too tall.

IMO, they like drier conditions, so near the top of the viv would be best.

just got powder blues and azeurus in after 2 months of waiting, so i'm hoping to get the ball rolling soon.

the first of the last 2 pics looks like tillandsia ionantha ok for a viv,but needs to be up top, the second is probably an epidendrum hybrid, which could get 3 feet tall. some advice on the viv... lose the spidr plant, you'll thank me later also add lots of leaf litter and choose azureus or powder blues not both! personally for a first frog, i'd choose azureus over pb's. they will be more striking from across the room. good luck

Thank you for the answers! I was planning on going only azeurus, although I haven't seen powder blues in person, so i'll just have to see, but I am most definitely not mixing them, don't worry. I guess I will lose the spider plants.... I wish they didn't get so big. My next trip up to delray beach will yield some plants also, my G'ma has a slat house filled with tropicals.

I was going through some photos and found a picture of one of my Encyclia tampensis flowers.

Ok, so I have mounted the broms on the wall, keeping 3 little spider plants in a pot up high, moved the ball moss and other small brom to the top, and I also found out that those red broms ARE fireball cultivar, so that's cool.

I have one brom that I'm not sure of, it has a root system so I think I should be keeping it in a wall pot, and I need an ID on it if possible

Still not sure what kind of soil to use for the wall pots, or any good candidates for plants to go in them. Any advice would be awesome!

Also, Dracenae does well in very moist, right? I have it planted close ot the waterfall where it WILL get some splash action.

What do you guys think about my current plant situation?
