My Pile of Rocks

I picked up this 45 gal tank a few years ago during one of Petco's $1/gal sale. I finally decided to set it up today. It was just going to be a fairly simple grow out tank--probably for some P. vittatus I need room for--but morphed into something a bit more complex when I began to implement some fake rocks I made a couple months back.

It's pretty fresh (less than an hour old) so the leaf litter is a bit bright for my liking, and I need to gather up my plants and get a few more rocks to transition into the water portion (all of which are under a few inches of snow). The purple rock in the water is temporary.

Looks great Ron. Do you attach the rocks to each other with pins/toothpicks or some sort of adhesive?

Technically I should, but I didn't have any skewers on hand and don't want to silicone anything to the glass at this point, so it's all just sort of set in there and puzzled together. There is one large piece that actually looks like numerous pieces--I'll probably end up skewering one or two of the smaller ones to it so that the whole thing is more stable.

I like it with no plants, it seems more realistic. I was just thinking about those rocks, wondering what you were doing with them.

I really, really like this tank. If you plant it, please go lightly and maybe throw some nice mosses in there. Good luck with it, and nice job!

I agree with a light planting. Maybe some harder to come by plants or nice miniatures. The hard scape is great on its own so it would be a shame for it to get hidden. I'd love to see updated pictures when you have the chance.

This is great! I would just stuff a few epiphytic ferns in the crevices and call it good.

this is indeed inspirational and realistic. I've wanted to do something like this myself. I agree with light planting... maybe some low growing saliginella (unicata I believe) or just mosses. Regardless, with how great it looks now I trust that it will turn out beautiful regardless of how many plants are in there. Whatever frogs end up there are going to have one hell of a house warming party.
