mistking overkill?

4243 Views 10 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  chadfarmer
I am setting up a 40B vert and I got a very good deal on a mistking set up with premium nozzles, timer, etc.

I was researching how many nozzles to run in the 40B and I began to be a little concerned that a mistking might be OVERKILL. Is this thing going to just drench things too much? Is it really designed to be used with multiple vivs only?

If it will work for me, how many nozzles would you use in a 40B? I am planning on drilling an overflow.

Thanks for the replies!

What Timer? How Many Nozzles..Wise decision getting it

I was researching how many nozzles to run in the 40B and I began to be a little concerned that a mistking might be OVERKILL. Is this thing going to just drench things too much?
That all depends on how you set it up. Set up varies from tank to tank. You may not need to mist but 1 or 2 times a week, or you might need to mist 2 times an hour depending on your tank set up and factors such as heat and air flow. If you feel you need 5 gallons of Water per Watering your gonna drench things. If your gonna try breeding you may need more Nozzles to ensure water goes into the breeding device on a regular basis.

Is it really designed to be used with multiple vivs only?
No It is Not...1 to up to 70 nozzles depending on which pump you actual got..Post more details and someone can give you better advice on the Number of tanks. Yes It may seem excessive to have a Misting system for just 1 tank but If you do not have a whole lot of Time on your hands then Hand Misting might be the worse decision. Imagine having a 10 Gallon Reservoir and Misting Daily for Half a Year without having to Worry..just fill once in a while. I was spending up to 2 Hours a day filling and spraying my tanks each day..Now I look at the Reservoir and fill it once a Month.

If it will work for me, how many nozzles would you use in a 40B? I am planning on drilling an overflow.
Again to many unknown Variables prevent for saying 1 or 50 Nozzles.
Ventilation
Type of Plants and how Many
Horizontal or Vertical
Your Might not even need to drill the Tank

Great reply. Thanks! I do emergency service work so time can be a challenge. I automated my fish tank and it was the best thing for both me and the fish.It also gives me more time to enjoy the "fun" part.
As far as the plan for the tank goes- It will be a vertical set up I have one of aaafrogs LED light set ups and a vertical conversion kit coming.
I plan on having lots of plants though specific types have not been decided. I enjoy the plant side of things alot.
I hope to have more than adequate ventilation and plan on using fans. I am still researching this as well.

Here are is a list and some pics of the mistking set up I got -
Mist King Pump with backflow valve to prevent backflow into reservoir
Mist King seconds timer I can mist down to just a couple of seconds.
2- 4 Head misters fully directional
2- 2 Head misters fully directional
1- Single Head Misters fully directional
7 Port Distribution Block
many ball valves, tees, 90 fittings
2g Reservoir with bulkhead

Sorry no good pics of the timer....I believe it is the 29.99 version.

Mistking is never overkill... xept maybe if you only got one of those nano exo tank >_> ahahah but who has these other than spider guys? and spiders don't like mist...!

40g, you'll want 1 or 2 nozzles.
you will have to adjust misting frequencies, and how long
with 2 nozzles, you'll want less misting since you don't want to flood anything

i strongly advice you get a FB

EDIT: that is the small pump, 1-20nozzle
that 7port thing is overkill tho:p you won't be needing that really
also those nozzles can all be modified you know... you can turn them all into single (with more bulkheads) and you can all turn them into 6ish nozzles!! You can do what you want with these!

What is FB?

Thanks for the rest of your post and it is great to know I didn't just throw my money away.:D

Yea... until they get 8 More tanks....I suspect it was a package deal
you really dont need a port for a single tank... i run 7-8-9-10 nozzles on a single line
I have around 20 vivs so around 30 nozzle and am not using all the 7 ports on that thing

FB stands for false bottoms, you dont want your substrat to soak in water so elevating it via a false bottom is a good way to prevent this, very useful with misting and good for plants

it was indeed a package deal, but I guess you could try and sell that manifold for 50$ if you don't plan on using it! im sure it will sell
I've been messing around with different nozzle combinations on some tanks and while a single nozzle can with enough time heavily mist a 20 gallon verticle, I'm finding that I prefer to use a double nozzle for fewer seconds. That way the it moistens everything more evenly.
With the mistking systems keep in mind that if you don't like how two nozzles works for you, you can easily increase the number of nozzles to do what you want.

AHHH...False Bottom! Yeah, a false bottom will be used for sure.

The port will go on the classified section then. Hopefully someone will make good use of it.

Thanks for the nozzle info Ed. I will keep some of the extra nozzles to experiment with. More nozzles and less time makes sense though.

Thanks again for all the great info everyone. It looks like I can officially move on to other parts of my research. Air circulation.....:D

DIY Air Circulation | GlassTropics
is an easy and very efficient way of moving air

i find grimm's technique to be even better, a bit more laborius tho! check out the peninsula thread
i have had 1 for over a few years and works great even on 1 tank
