leucomela daily temp range?

hello,

recently i purchased a pair of leucomelas from a very well known and reputable dealer. i hadn't asked them temerature ranges but was curious to hear from other leuc breeders what they feel the optimum temp range should be or what they are keeping there tanks at right now.
i guess what i'm most interested in knowing right now is what do you think is the upper temperature range for standard leucomelas and do the british guyana leucs also have the same temp ranges? appreciate the thoughts. thanks:)

I think you'd be pretty safe to keep them under 82F. Though out of all the different frogs if you hit a spike on a summer day I think they'd be one of the most tollerable. I've seen viv's get up to 90 with no problem. Keep in mind though that they'll get under stuff nd into the substrate which is probably 5-10 degrees cooler.

thanks ben. i thought i had seen where some breeders are keeping them into the 80's but i feel safe in the seventees. i've only had this proven pair of leucs a short time. no calling yet but i'm a patient guy. was considering varying temps up and down to trigger a possible comfortable target zone for the male to initiate calling. but i don't claim temp makes any difference. most importantly is the maximum temp range info. thanks for replying. i appreciate it.
My breeding tank is usually between 75 and 80 degrees. I also mist a couple times a day to help bring temps down.

If you want some calling, try misting 3-4 times per day, and play the leucomela call from the link below.

thanks for that info. how often should i try the call recording? have you had luck initiating breeding calls in leucs using the recordings?

Hi Addicted2darts,

When I only had one pair of D. leucomelas, I would play the call back to them and the male would become very territorial immediately. He would find the female and try to wrestle her (I assume to keep her from responding to the other male) and start calling immediately. It was such great fun, that I would play the call back to the male for hours at a time. I felt we were really "communicating" with each other.

Now I have so many pairs that they all call to each other and the recording isn't necessary.

Good luck with them! Richard.

Hi

Mine are kept in very varying temperatures, ranging from 65 all the way to 90.
It is a large viv so they do have the opportunity to seek colder/warmer areas as they see fit.
I think Leucs are very tolerant of the temperature, so unless you get to the extremes <60 and >90 i think you will be fine.

They call all day long, every day.

When they were younger, and had only barely begun calling i used to play the recording to them and they would answer back. Now it is not needed :)

I dont know how old yours are, but that definitely plays a role in the calling. Mine did not start calling on a regular basis untill they were around 12 months old.

My probable pair of leucs call almost everyday...loud enough that I can hear them from the back of my apt to the front door! Their temps range from 72-77 most days to a little warmer in the summer. I find that they call the most in the mid day through the evening hours...which would be the warmest portions of the day. Perhaps I would have an easier time getting them to breed if I kept them at the high end of those temps throughout the day?

One of my luecs just started calling at 9mos. How will I know if the other unsexed frog is a female? Typical responses of the other frogs in the tanks?
