Just seeded a tank... and mites showed up

So I've been working on a new tank for some thumbs and I just seeded it it with springtails last week or so. I put some chopped up mushrooms in a couple places on Friday to hopefully get some food in there for the springs to take off.

I looked at one of the spots I placed mushrooms a few minutes ago and saw some mites crawling around. I've done some searches and it seems as though there are conflicting opinions about whether these mites in the tank will be a problem or not.

Sooo... what do you guys think? Should I can this tank that I've spent the last couple weeks building... Or will these guys not pose much of a threat and most likely end up as frog food?

Mites are everywhere! Every viv WILL end up with mites. You cannot prevent it. They are just another source of food. No big deal. I just strive to keep them out of my cultures.

I see my R. sirensis eating mites even when flies are around. I don't think you want an explosion of mites, but a small in tank culture is just fine. If you want them out, just bait them by using a small cup of FF media. Remove it everyother day or so, and a large portion of the mite culture could be effictively removed over time.

thats what I originally figured... but I found an older thread with someone talking about them exploding and taking over the tank. Either way, theres not much food in there for them right now beyond the mushrooms anyway.

They do look like perfect sized food for some juvi thumbs... :D

When you introduce the "thumbs", the mites will have an effective balance in place, ;)

AH, I have a bug closet too! Great minds think alike :D

Do you have the shelves organized by species? Also, are your Folsoma in that closet as well?
