i'm working on a styrofoam 'rock' backdrop right now, which i will be sealing with marine epoxy. however, i have been considering how to color the epoxy.

i've considered using food dye and mixing it with the epoxy, but i have a feeling that would fade quite a bit over time.

so now what i'm considering is mixing black charcoal into the outer layer of epoxy. the kind i've found is the type that is found at art stores, and claims to be 100% carbon.

what i'm wondering is, is this safe? carbon should be harmless, right?
or not.

here's the type of carbon i wa stalking about:

anyone have any tips on how to safely color the epoxy-coated styrofoam?

thanks,
sam
