Hey Doug, I use a frog tube all the time. I think you're going to want something a little bigger around, even for thumbnails. I use tubes about 1.5 inches across. Too small and you risk crushing a leg.
Also, I like them open at both ends. This way I can very gently "chase" him out with a pencil eraser or rounded dowel.
