I have had a thirty gallon hex set up for a while now waiting for some new frogs. I decided a while back that I would try out some imitators. So I placed my order with Saurian En. for three. But now that I have made some changes to the tank, I figured I could probably put one or two more in there comfortably. So my question for you guys is will four or five of these frogs be ok in a tank this size?
Also what type of mini broms would be best to use; I am still having trouble picking these out?

You could easily have four of five of them in there. Back when I had them and was really breeding them I put four in a 50 gallon cube. After pulling eggs several times a week I tore the tank apart to redo it. I pulled around 20 frogs out of various ages plus a half dozen tadpoles that were growing literally in the mud of the tank. I think your four or five will be fine.

As far as bromeliads, you need to keep in mind whether you want to find the eggs or not. If you want them to rear their own offspring, then use any sort of fireball hybrid, Vriesea, Nidularium, anything without spine that could cut you (note: there is a debate over spines or no spines so I'll just avoid that for now). If you want to collect eggs, use things like Japanese evergreens etc and overlap the leaves. They really like fresh new smooth leaves that overlap creating a dark place for them to lay. I also used to use old aquarium fish flake containers flipped over and cut a hole for them to enter. Basically it's a mini coconut hut for them placed at different heights. Many other people use film canisters.

Looks good. I would add more cover for them to hang out in (of various heights). Seriously consider those plants I listed-- or really anything that has overlapping leaves. I think Christina told me about that many many years ago and it worked pefectly. I was actually talking to my parents a few weeks ago and they missed those days back in high school with them calling. You could hear them down in the kitchen chirping when they were upstairs in my bedroom. Great little frogs.

[Dancing frogs]

I haven't had luck breeding them yet, but here is what I've noticed. In my 15 tall hex, I have two neo pepper broms, three neo midget (ampallucia, probably miss-spelled) and one billbergia brom from black jungle, along with some ferns, and creeping fig. It seems that they like the midget and the billbergia the best during the day. Just before the lights go out, all three of them usually group up in a tangle of creeping fig at the very top of the tank.

Hi,
I have had imitators for close to 19 months now and have had good luck with Neo. compacta "small form" in the vivs they have been in.I am working on getting some groups going out of 7 froglets now.
My pair I have now are laying their eggs in a hiding spot so I am just relying on my male to transport the tads for me.They are tending 2 in their tank now.One thing is for sure, if you are using corkbark flats for a background they will find a way to get back there and lay eggs.Talking from experiance here They are very cool frogs and watching them tend tads in brom axils is a must see!!!!!

Do they remember to go back (behind the bark) for the tads? I'm putting together some vertical tens with cork bark and was wondering if I should try to seal them out or leave some of the gaps. If it works out well, I mean if the eggs don't go to waste back there, the more laying spots the better, right?

Yeah, most of the time he did.I have watched tads slide down the glass to their death too.What I'd recommand isonce you have the flats siliconed down go get someGreat stuff and fill in the cracks.Then, what I recently did, use black silicon over the places the foam shows and put dried ground coconut onto the black silicon.What I also did in my new 20 verts is just used cocomatt on 3 sides of the tanks and just leaned cork bark onto the back of the tank and mounted bromiliads to it.I also have a chinese evergreen in there too.It isn't completely planted yet because I'm trying to sex the frogs and don't want too many hiding places so it is easier to remove the odd sexes.Hope this all helps,it's 3:50am and I'm not sure if I makes sense this early :?
