So we were at petco today and they had a tank of tiny, itsy bitsy brown and gold frogs that claim they are mantella. If we weren't leaving for australia in a week, we'd have bought a few. Off to try and find out what kind. edited: ebenaui.

But they weren't aurantiaca. And I really want aurantiaca.

Even if they were, i don't buy pets from petco.
I buy from animal breeders that i trust.
but they were cool and tempting and surprising.

I was shocked also when I found a edenaui at petco. They had it alone by the rats/mice. dry coco fiber, open screen top, no water and a few plastic plants.. the frog had dug out a hole under the plastic plant. So I had to buy it.

What did they charge you for it?

And at the same time you are giving them money for taking care of an animal poorly, increased the demand, and let them know that if they sell them, people will buy them. A better idea would be to talk to the people that work there and tell them how to actually take care of an animal responsibly. But I understand it's hard to leave it knowing it could die. It's pretty ridiculous the condition people are allowed to keep animals in. Oh well, if they die we can just bring in more right??

not really. You just give the store an incentive to buy more
not if you yell to the management at the store about the poor treatment of the animal...or that is what I would do if I was in that process, but also just depends if they 1. care or 2. just trying to make money and could care less about the actual quality of the animal.

MM, was that at the Greenwood, IN petco store?

they were in a proper enclosure, although humidity could have been slightly higher. this particular petco has great herp staff. the other one in town, sucks.

I bet you could get the manager pretty excited if you went in and asked for their CITES paperwork given that many Mantella species are endangered...
Highly unlikely.... They would simply point to the fact that they get all of thier herps from one centralized distributor and that that company holds all of the relevent paperwork for the company and suggest you contact the corporate lawyers for further questions.
Once the animal in present in the country, it doesn't have to have CITES paperwork traveling with it to document that it is or isn't legal... it is only useful if you have something that could result in USF&W interest to prove that you wern't complicit in smuggling...(which could be the difference between getting your animals back and not..).

Bummer! Well, I have found that following the manager around and asking a lot of technical questions about a neglected animal does at least annoy them. :D

And they can evict you from the store under police escort if they choose...and ban you from ever entering it again.

It wouldn't be the first time...;)

I wonder if I'd be thrown out for smelling like rotten fish. Hmmmm.

The herps at my local petco have looked good the last few years.

I hope you guys realize that the conditions frogs experience at a herp dealer aren't much better.
