Has anyone tried to use members of this genus in their terrarium's? Most get big...we're talking feet here, but I have heard of a couple varieties that stay small (like 2ft). They are real attractive looking when they flower. I wonder if they would even flower in these conditions? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

If your set-up is big they would probably do well. However, they won't flower until they form a large clump. You would also have to be careful in picking the species not only for size considerations, but how wet they like the soil. Alot of the species that occur in closed forest grow on river banks and in boggy areas where the canopy is thinner, as on the whole the genus like bright light. On the other hand the species common around disturbed areas can be much less tolerable of "wet feet". Just some thoughts.

i have 2 different types of these growing in a tank now, and i can tell you flat out that they are one of the most difficult plants i have ever had. They have very high light demands that are really hard to maintain, and they like a lot of humidity. They need to be constantly wet, but not in standing water. I haven't been able to get these guys to flower yet, but i finally got the plant to take and thrive. I agree that unless you had a huge tank, it wouldn't be very practical in a frog tank.

Thanks for the info guys. I was going to outfit a few in a 55gal, but will probably pass on them for the time being. What species have you used monkey?

bird of paradise, and kimi and some unidentified hawaiian helio. getting frustrated with them right now, might give up on them.

These plants need fuul sun in this part of the world to do well. They are just not going to do well in a Terrarium. If they did nothing else would since they develope huge roots and are heavy feeders.
