Hi Gang,
Twice in one month I have found one of my Home Depot 4' shop lights dead. Dead dead dead. The bulbs are fine, but the ballasts are wasted. I am sick of replacing shop lights. Can anyone recommend a good reliable light fixure that cranks out the light but not too much heat? I know this is a common question, but I don't visit the part section often enough.
Thanks,
Dave

I had that same problem when I tryed to mount the ballast remotely. They over heat and then crap out. If you have spare heatsinks, they will solve the problem. For my purposes (remote mounting) I went and got a larger ballast; more ballast=more surface area=better heat disipation. They were about 13$ at Lowe's, and I have yet to have a problem with them.

Dave - go to Home Depot.

Ignore the T10 shoplights (traditional diameter bulbs).

Get the T8 shoplights... a bit smaller diameter.

I've had NO problems with them in over a year of use. As my T10's die (and don't they!) I've been replacing them with T8's.

Higher light output and supposedly lower energy use.

They coast a bit more (for the 4' fixture), but it's worth it.

Dave, go back to home Depot and look for the ballasts by Advanced. We use those at work to replace the 4 light Magnatek ballasts and they last for years.
