I'm new to Springtail cultures and have a question. I've read that you should put a couple grains of rice or uncooked pasta into the cultures. I put a couple of pieces of pasta, and now they are fuzzy. Is this the desired result or is the mold hazardous to the colony?

It should be fine. Springtails love fungus.
If the food hangs around more than around four days, feed a little less next time. Overfeeding is bad because of the extra gas caused by breakdown can "gas" the springtails.

Thanks! I'll make sure to add a smaller piece and not let it sit for longer than four days.

Oh... I just thought of another question on springtails. Folks recommend using charcoal in the colony. Can I use the activated carbon I have for my aquarium in the cultures?

It shouldn't be a problem. Activated carbon is just charcoal that's been ground up. Just make sure you wash the carbon first to get the dust out.
