Ok, I did a search on 'false bottom' and didn't really find anything that addressed my questions, though I find it hard to believe that it hasn't been asked before. So here it is...

I've decided in my 29 gl tall tank that I will obtain as soon as I find one for a great price, lol, that I'm definately going to use a false bottom design with a waterfall. I'm pretty sure I understand the whole idea behind the design and all that, but with the waterfall, wouldn't the water just make the soil all muddy? And if i were to somehow contain the water to a pond-ish area, wouldn't it not get the full filtering benefits of the substrate?

Use pond liner, just heat it up and you will beable to shape it. That will give you a nice pond. And also to make sure no water splashes into the soil, i would use gravel as substate for an inch around the pond.

hey glasscages.com has 29 gallon tanks for around 30 bucks for terriums. the false bottom is easy just get the stuff from home depot and cut it to fit the tank put a hole in it and put a 1 inch pvc pipe with a cap that allows to drain but you can make the entire false bottom out of the egg crate lighting stuff and zip ties the big ones. it is fairly easy to empty the water with a little pump that has a red ball on top to siphon the water. but check out glasscages.com for tanks i bet you find what your looking for. hope this helps some

Ok, so you're saying that I do the pond liner thing, and then the inch of gravel substrate around it will be the place through which the water overflows down into the resevoir?? How exactly does that filter it. Doesn't that sort of....defeat the purpose?

If you're wondering about their terrariums that come apart to ship, when they first introduced their knockdown terrariums, I inquired about them. What I was told is that they are not sealed like the aquairums, but pieces of acrylic slotted into the bottom.

Well see, I already emailed the people and they said shipping would be around 30 bucks, and there is no way I could get to any of their shows. None are even in my state. California is a big place, lol, not too many other states within driving distance. Ty but I'll try the swap meet, hehehe.

Regarding your original questions about waterfalls and false bottoms, I used a piece of pond liner (as was suggested earlier) to form the base of my waterfall and pond/bog area below the waterfall. You can make a nice crease in the pond area that acts as your "outlet" to cause water to spill over in one particular area and fall back into the false bottom.

If you are using a coarse substrate mix, the waterfall/pond should not be a problem, as I have found that it makes a nice gradient of moist to dry where I can plant different plants. Of course, my terrarium is a bit larger than yours, but I have used the same setup in a 10 gallon terrarium with no problems.
