I was recently thinking about a terrarium setup and that I wanted a waterfall/stream and how everyone on here says to make sure the pump or if you have an underwater heater that it's easily accessible. And the only way I've seen that done is making a background going around it but I feel that uses up valuable space. I have a chinchilla and her cage has a slide out tray for easy cleaning. This is the best picture I could find to get this idea across:

Do you think this is possible to do? Like instead of the bottom lip that is usually included in terrariums have a glass/plexiglass tray and have the egg crate siliconed to the sides and have it rest atop the tray. I think it would be hard to make it flush with the terrarium and make sure there's no gaps between the eurovent or door, but it's just an idea I came up with so I didn't really think too deep into it. Is this a good or bad idea? And if it's a good one do you have any suggestions of how to make it work. I also think it would be an easy way to drain the drainage layer if it works.

That makes sense. That's true about the dirt and plants parts. I know I've read some threads and they said that the roots of their plants would grow all the way to the drainage layer. Good point thanks.
