Hey all,
On a separate topic, I mentioned a tank set up that I saw designed by Jon Warner. I'll provode a picture soon. For a false bottom, he uses insulation styrofoam found at Home Depot. It is brillant. I tried it myself this week while building a new amazonicus tank. I used to go to the lighting section of Home Depot or Lowe's and pay $12.00 a pop for the egg crate lighting. I have learned to dislike that stuff. It is easy to cut, but picking up the little white fragments left over is a pain. However, with a $2.00 piece of 3/4 inch styrofoam roughly the same size I am sold. It is cheaper and easier to cut. All you need is a box cutter or for those fancy crafty people like me a wonder cutter hot wire (Michael's and cuts styrofoam like a hot knife through...well you know) It's also great for burning finger tips. The styrofoam cutter is nice in that you don't have little white balls of styrofoam to pick up afterwards. The styrofoam is also easy to poke holes into so that you can seat roots down ito the false bottom of the tank. You don't need the fiberglass screen either that people tend to use with egg crate too. But I suggest some people try it. I wil post a picture soon, so you can see what I am talking about.

I'm not sure I would be comfortable using over say PVC like they do for false bottoms as over time it can become a little brittle. Now if you use to form the whole land section then I can see that.

But I agree maybe my use is a bit different. Waiting to see how they used it. I paid like $10 or something and still have a ton of it.

I don't see that you used it in place of egg crate Kyle.

You used it instead of Great Stuff or Tree Fern Root?
