Do any of you guys buy dart auratus over the internet? I am looking for some new options because my local reptile store is horrible and I just lost my 3rd dart frog and I also lost 3 red eyes from the same place. If anyone could help me out I would appreciate it greatly thanks!

Where do you live? There is probably a breeder relatively close to you. I would never buy darts from pet stores. Otherwise, if your are going to order frogs, I would suggest Patrick from http://www.Saurian.net. His frogs are 1" plus when you get them, probably double the size of the ones you got from the petstore, that is assuming they were even captive bred. He has decent prices too. Hope this helps

I'm sorry to hear of your bad experiences with your pet store. I would not assume all pet stores are bad, nor do I buy the "50-50". I may have lucked out, but the 2 Auratus (from a pet store) that my mom and dad gave me for my b-day three weeks ago are very healthy, and have already laid 7 good eggs!
If I had my choice, I would like to purchase from a breeder. However if there is no breeder nearby, you have to have them $hipped. I don't know about the rest of y'all, but I can never get a wink of sleep the night before a shipment!
Just my $0.02!

I live in NY on Long Island...I am not sure if there are an breeders near me how can I find out? The frogs I got from the pet store were all pretty little the three that I started with grew up fine and they are about 1" or bigger now I just have 1 thats a little smaller (I have a total of 4 left at one piont I had 7). The other three I lost were very tiny, but I made sure they were eating so I know that wasn't the problem, but I'd rather buy from a breeder from now on I get so upset when they die  and maybe if they were bigger that would eliminate the deaths

There is always the White Plains Reptile show coming up on July 18th I believe. I live in Brookyln and work in NYC and most of the frogs I have purchased were from out of state dealers who shipped them to me. Out of 4 shipments all have made it to me alive and well.

locations...

Froggurl,

You might try updating your profile with your location. I know I usually look to that first when someone posts a question similar to yours.

In addition, you might get someone in the area who would pm you but not post on the forum with info.

hi froggirl,
Im from the new york area and I am always in the long island area, because there is a really nice greenhouse out there. Where did you buy darts from locally? I ask this because I have never seen a store in the area that sells dart frogs, Dedroboard may have to go to that store and teach them how to properly raise his frogs. lol

Anyway I agree with with rob you should try going to the white plains reptile show. There are a lot of good online breeders who are sponsored on this board. Do you raise your own cultures?

No I do not raise my own cultures. I actually would like to, but I am not sure how to. I just started keeping frogs as of April 30th. The store I bought them from is called the Reptile store. Its on middle country road I believe it is considered Centerach. The store had a large selection of darts I honestly don't even know all the names. They had the yellow and black one a red and black one tincs and the auratus B&B and G&B. The problem is that they sold them way to tiny all the ones I lost were very very small...maybe 1/2 inch. They breed the G&B auratus in the store they have 2 adult frogs there that are not for sale, but as I have said from my expierence they were just too small.

You should consider raising your own cultures. The easiest way to do it is to buy containers, pre-made media that you just add water to, and something like excelsior (shredded aspen) to put in them. Much cheaper then buying a culture from a store (in the long run).

Then, when your comfortable with that you can think about making your own media, which is what i do, it's pretty easy and cheaper still.

here are some links you might want to check out for culturing supplies:
