Default My Five Lined Dumpy Family!

This is the beginning post of my update thread for my two exotic setups my Southeastern Five Lined Skinks and my Dumpy Tree Frogs. I will talk about their setups, provide care and display videos from my YouTube channel.

Dumpy Tree Frogs

I just completed their build and the frogs are in their setup tonight as I write this. Just some small pieces need adjustments. In this setup it's a 24x18x36 Exo Terra Terrarium with Exo Terra UVB Compact Lights and a T5 Fixture by Odyssea. I am going to connect my old Monsoon RS400 and a Repti Temp controller for temperature. I had my frogs in a 55 gallon and finally I can say the frogs look very happy. They are about 2-2.5 inches and can't jump the entire length of the tank. The frogs were very interested in how high they could climb. They didn't think they could climb up to the top meaning climb 36 inches high so they went down closer to where their plants are at around 20 inches. There is also a male Betta Fish in this setup.

Skinks
The Skinks are about to have their setup made and in their setup it will house three Skinks, five Millipedes, 2 Snails, and some small fish. It will be a 30 Gallon that will have a fogger and some other devices. I'll have to make a new post soon. This setup will be very unique as 3 inhabitants that would interact in the wild (Skinks, Millipedes, and Snail) will live in the same enclosure. These are the largest Snails and Millipedes in North America and the Skinks live with the Millipedes now and there are no problems.

Default Re: My Five Lined Dumpy Family!

Dumpy Tree Frogs & Betta Fish Vivarium is 95% complete! More news on the Five Lined Skink setup too...

I added a Bonsai Tree to the setup to make it more bushy for the frogs and they immediately checked the tree out. I didn't see them climb it yet but I have seen them on the trunk. I'm hoping to add a few plants and this setup along with the Skinks enclosure will share a Mistking Misting System which will be cool to see how the frogs respond to this. I will attempt to get a trailer of both enclosures and the other 2 pets that will make up my exotic animals for YouTube and show what is to come after I hibernate my native amphibians!
I'll be getting some extra time so I'll be finishing my White's Tree Frog Care Sheet soon! I'll have a video with the care sheet so you can understand whichever way you learn better through reading or video or both!

The Skinks are next to get a much needed update. I stopped the baby skink from escaping but I gave up on keeping them in a big setup because they didn't use the whole enclosure. I'm excited to show my male skink Pharaoh. He is so bold and dominant over his territory but I have never seen him show aggressive behavior. He has seen my American Toads and actually laid with them and now he is allowing Giant American Millipedes to live with his family. He always makes sure to evaluate whatever comes to his territory. He accepted the toads but there was one he didn't accept as much. He was more curious of it. He never hurt the toad. He also checks the invading Millipedes and senses they are harmless.

The Millipedes will eat the Skink poop and decaying plant matter. They burrow which will turn my soil and help the plants. So basically the Millipedes are servants of Pharaoh and the Skinks because they benefit the Skinks being with them. There is something coming to the enclosure to serve the Skink Dynasty. Large Land Snails are going to be added to the enclosure and these eat what the Millipedes do meaning they will benefit the Skinks being in the enclosure. This will be interesting to see Lizards living amongst the Large Invertebrate Millipedes and Snails in the enclosure.

For the future after the Skinks would pass I may just keep the Snails and Millipedes together in a bioactive setup. I'm undecided if I'd add more Skinks or something else but it would feature the Inverts.

Have you ever seen lizards and inverts living together?

Which setup sounds more interesting to you?

I have some awesome news! While on vacation I managed to capture a frog in the same place where my lizards are from! And the Snails came today about 10 minutes after I got back. It looks like the Five Lined Dumpy Family will need to have an update soon!

Can you tell what frog species this is?

Default Re: My Five Lined Dumpy Family!

The first video is being finished up here are the details...

Attaining 50 subscribers I wanted to do something special and show you all the two enclosures that are involved in this thread. I couldn't think of a better time then now with the new animals in one tank and the other being 95% finished.

There are more animals and Inverts then I thought and some didn't come out when I was filming but I got some all but 4 in the video. There are a lot of Millipedes in the one setup so I also couldn't get all of them but when I build the new kingdom for the Skink Dynasty all the inhabitants will be seen going in.

Here is a list of the inhabitants but there may be more Millipedes then I know of.

The Dumpy Family:
Max (Female)
Spurgeon (Male)
Jeremiah (Male)
Fin (Betta Fish)

The Skink Dynasty:
Pharaoh (Male Skink)
Amsi (Female Skink)
Ruby (Offspring Skink)
Male Un named Tree Frog (I think it's a Green Tree Frog)
4-8 Giant Millipedes
2 Large Virginia Land Snails

That's around 20 overall which is a lot to focus on. Since the Skink Dynasty is teeming with life the plants won't be talked about much but the plant life will be more discussed in the Dumpy Family.

Both setups will be side by side. The Skink Dynasty is not yet built. I have everything in my 75 Gallon but the ecosystem is moving to my 55 Gallon when completed.

Both kingdoms are going to have a sprayer or two inside the enclosure. I'm undecided yet which mister I will use. Both setups will be heated with Under Tank Heaters and Basking Bulbs and such to keep them hot, humid, and authentic to their natural habitat.

A small compare and contrast to the setups
There are very big differences in the setups how the animals run their ecosystems. The Dumpy Family is 3 tree frogs that are equal and all can eat the same stuff and there is no real hierarchy. These frogs are communal and like the company of one another. The frogs enjoy interacting with each other. Fin the fish is solitary and he's good with that but all 4 animals are friendly and hands on. I can feed them and work with them.

The Skink Dynasty is very different. This ecosystem is controlled by a peaceful male Skink. He is not afraid of anything that comes to his territory. Anything that does come into contact with his territory he goes to investigate it. He accepted the toads I had him with but he also can choose not to accept something. He is joined by his mate Amsi and their offspring Ruby. He is very large as some have told me he's as big as a Broadhead Skink. I have never held Pharaoh and I've only seen the Skinks eat maybe 4 times but I see lizard poop a lot. He knows the Millipedes aren't going to harm him or his family so he allows them. He doesn't interact with them much but he did investigate them. He also is smart enough to realize they are toxic so no Skink has tried a Millipede. The two females follow his lead. He doesn't care about the snails but idk if he would eat them so it's a wait and see thing. He allows the little frog also. The little frog sleeps where the lizards do so they don't have a problem.

The Dumpy Family relies on their lush forest to give them security and humidity and allow them to blend in to hunt.

The Skink Dynasty relies on the plants yes but they need the Inverts like the Millipedes to dig and turn the soil to fertilize the plants and the snails to eat decaying plant matter. The Millipedes eat poop too. The Skinks can even rely on the frog because the frog can hunt the crickets at night when the crickets could attempt to attack the lizards. This tank is truly an ecosystem because all the pieces work together.

These are going to be more featured in the winter as my main setup I will hibernate the animals.

What is something you would want to see between the two families?

Have you ever seen Millipedes breed?

Have you ever considered using land Snails in a setup?

Happy Birthday Max...Some great updates too!

August 22nd was her 4 year birthday! She got a great surprise too. This year she got a large terrarium, she got the old Mistking that somehow won't work in my large tank but it will work for her tank. She also got some friends in Spurgeon and Jeremiah. This year might go down as the year of the White's Tree Frog.

I fed the tree frogs until they got full bellies. All the plants are doing great. Many of the plants have become close together and created a live canopy. I've never seen that before in person and it's really cool.

The Skink Dynasty are doing well. They are poised to have their enclosure become a sight to see as well. The Snails mated and so did the Millipedes. I have seen both eating the Basil plant the new Squirrel Tree Frog came with. It's still growing but it's a meal for the Inverts. I saw the Millipedes breeding of all places in the food bowl. Right beside them were three small snails.

The Skinks are doing great. I don't have more info on them I haven't seen them eat but they have been active and alert to me.

There might be something at the end of the year where I ask you all to vote which group of animals had the best year the Dumpy Family or my 125 Gallon PA Woods?

Checkout the video I made of the Five Lined Dumpy Family!

New video in the works and a cool update...

So it took a while for me to get into this but I am actually going to decorate both setups hopefully for the seasons! So it will start with Halloween first as I bought a couple decorations to start with. There is going to be a large Jack-o'-lantern under the Bonsai Tree with the Dumpy Family and it will also have another neat decoration. The Skink Dynasty is getting the same decorations so both will be the same. I will try for other holidays too but I'm excited to see how this goes! So are you excited to see these setups decorated for Halloween? Remember it's a trial so if I don't really like it then it might just be a one time only. So I am not going all out just yet with decorations.

The next video I will show a video of the Five Lined Dumpy Family feeding on Crickets and I will try to feed the White's Tree Frogs the Hornworms! I'm sure the Inverts will pop up and so will the Squirrel Tree Frog at some point.

Have you ever thought to decorate your reptile or amphibians enclosure?

Do you think the Dumpy Family will eat the Hornworms?

Are you excited to see a feeding video?

If that mushroom expanded out into a rather parisol shape it is quite possibly: Leucocoprinus birnbaumii. A common mushroom found on potted plants from nurseries. They are harmless, and pretty much impossible to eradicate. They like to fruit in groups, so that is good sign that it is Leucocoprinus. They will keep coming back as a harmless, stunning addition to your natural vivarium.

Thanks for identifying the mushroom! I really appreciate it! I was a little concerned that the mushroom might be dangerous but that makes me feel a lot better.

I saved lives of some frogs this week...

With Hurricane Florence hitting the Carolinas I thought of how the new frog and a surprise I've been hiding from you all were actually spared from having to experience the hurricane. The Squirrel Tree Frog is safe living in the Skink Dynasty and I am working on getting the tank done by Thanksgiving.

I have a surprise for you all. My relatives gave me some tadpoles from their pond in Charlotte NC. The tadpoles are turning into little frogs which I assumed to be tree frogs of some type. I was correct and there are a few starting to lose their tails. I am unsure of what type of frog species it would be. It's between Green Tree Frogs, Cope's Gray Tree Frogs, some Chorus Frogs possibly so if anyone knows which tree frogs near the Charlotte area have been breeding from August to now I would appreciate your comment!

I'll have more updates about the little surprise tadpoles sometime soon.

Some if the updates...

I was feeding my Skinks and I put some recently dead crickets in the enclosure thinking the Snails and Millipedes would eat them. I look in after five minutes and I see the male skink eating the dead crickets and he ate them all! I couldn't believe this! I didn't think Skinks would do that. He really impressed me with doing this. I am happy to say that I am going to move in the same direction as the Dumpy Family and get an Exo Terra Terrarium for them. The 36x18x24 will be the new Skink Dynasty. This will be more accessible for maintenance and will be much better in ease of care for me and the Skinks. Florence (Squirrel Tree Frog) looks plump and seems comfortable. I'm looking forward to getting him a mate in the spring. They are a beautiful frog.
When I get the new terrarium I'll give updates on what is going on!

The Dumpy Family is getting ready for their showdown with my Gray Tree Frogs of the New PA Woods Vivarium on Thanksgiving Day. Max has been eating a lot and is plump. Jeremiah and Spurgeon are doing great but still are shy. The Dumpy Family is the most complete enclosure at this point with how close it is to being finished in the major building. Fin is doing great but been hiding and exploring the back of the enclosure.

I think around the end of winter both enclosures will be finished and which will be really exciting!

The next update is coming on Thanksgiving! Be ready to watch who wins the Whites Tree Frogs vs Gray Tree Frogs.

We are close to Thanksgiving and I have completed the Gray Tree Frog part of the video. I'm working on finishing touches for the Whites Tree Frogs. I want to have close to equal screen time.

This video looks like it's coming down to the two animals pictured in the faceoff picture. Max and Bane. They are seemingly going to get a lot of camera time.

The categories that you can vote for are these:
1)Better Hunter
2)Best Vivarium
3)Most Exciting/Informative

The Dumpy Family will have a good showing in this video. I am excited for Thursday and I hope you are!

Default Re: My Five Lined Dumpy Family!

Thanks again to everybody who voted for the 3 categories of the video. I wrote a longer post about the Thanksgiving Special Video in the Gray Tree Frog Thread.

My goal for the Dumpy Family is to get Jeremiah more comfortable with people. When I got him at a reptile expo he was happy that I got him but he had sores on his nose that he recovered from and I think he must have had a bad experience with people. My goal is to get him ready for another video soon for the Dumpy Family.
I also didn't show how incredible Max is as a hunter. She just crushes prey with her size and strength. I think you will want to see her hunt in a video sometime soon. I am going to get the Five Lined Dumpy Family Exo Terra Foggers to go with their Exo Terra Terrariums. I want to get some lucky bamboo for the Dumpy Family and some substrate in the water for Fin and the plants. Those are the slight changes to the Dumpy Family.

As for the Skink Dynasty they have come out to feed more and are becoming more comfortable with people. I have two pets I never saw eat before and they are both in this ecosystem. The Skink Dynasty is going to get a nice 36x18x24 terrarium and I'm going to try to get their enclosure set up so we can begin a series for the exotic animals. The Snails and Millipedes are all doing great and Florence the Squirrel Tree Frog is doing good. He's so funny how he comes out at random times and he just watches the larger insects. I think he's amazed that they are so big. An update is long over due for the Skink Dynasty and an update video is also long over due. We will have to work on that. I think around January to March will be the stride of the exotic animals videos.

What do you want to see the Skinks and White's Tree Frogs hunt in a feeding video?

Are you excited to see Pharaoh the Male Skink and Florence the Squirrel Tree Frog and all the members of the Skink Dynasty?

Would you want to see the Skink Dynasty included in next year's Thanksgiving Special?

Should we do another holiday special?

Default Re: My Five Lined Dumpy Family!

The largest feast ever for any animals...

So I bout Repti Worms and fed what I thought to be most to my toads, but I was very, very wrong. I began seeing a few Black Soldier Flies surface and thought it would be very nice to document the Gray Tree Frogs hunting the Black Soldier Fly. So I fed what again I thought to be all the Flies to the Gray Tree Frogs, but again I was wrong. Today as I woke up I noticed nearly 50+ Black Soldier Flies buzzing around and I knew the Gray Tree Frogs were not going to be able to handle the onslaught of a true Swarm of the Black Soldier Flies. So I needed to go to my largest arboreal species the Dumpy Family. I thought it would be great to see how the third largest tree frogs would fair against a swarm. It was 3 vs 50+. You may be wondering why would I allow just 3 frogs to attempt this? The answer was my toads would not be able to catch the flies if the flew to the top and the Gray Tree Frogs got a feast the previous day. You may be wondering why the Skink Dynasty was not called on for this battle to try to help the Dumpy Family. The reason is because I thought the Flies would escape their current enclosure. Once I get a terrarium for the Skink Dynasty they will be included in these battles.

So it was down to 3. Jeremiah was still shy and ate maybe 5-8 so it was really down to two. I have not seen Max this ferocious in years. This brought out the hunter in her and Spurgeon pushed he to the limit. Max ate most by far. She wiped out nearly 20+ on her own. These flies don't have a defense mechanism and are small so it's like feeding medium sized crickets to the Dumpy Family and I was keeping them on a leash not feeding them as much as they wanted. So today I allowed them to eat as much as they could. Max was picking them off as fast as 3 in a span of 10 seconds. Spurgeon was acting like he was starved and he and Max would lunge at one another out of aggression and to try to catch the next fly. I heard a rare distress call come from Max and if you know anything about frogs the females usually are silent. The Whites Tree Frogs are an exception as the female can make noises. She made them today as she saw Spurgeon catching her flies. She leaped right on him and grabbed his arm with her mouth trying to send a message. He didn't care and both kept eating.

So who would win? Would the Black Soldier Flies Swarm fill up the Dumpy Family and their numbers prove to be too great?

Or would the 2 members of the Dumpy Family overcome being outnumbered massively and defeat this invading Swarm?

Both happened.
There were maybe 10 of the Swarm of the Black Soldier Flies left and I saw Max and Spurgeon stop pursuing them. They decimated the swarm and left few for leftovers as I'm sure they probably ate more as I've been at work tonight.

The good news is that I got all of the encounters on my camera. So what do you think? Do you want to see the Dumpy Family team up with the Gray Tree Frogs for the next Holiday Special in the final Swarms Battle of 2018?

The State of the Five Lined Dumpy Family Address...

You have seen the Dumpy Family more towards the end of 2018 and they will continue to be a big contributor to the YouTube Channel. The Dumpy Family doesn't have too much to update in their enclosure as it's more of doing maintenance.

The Skink Dynasty is waiting patiently for the purchase of their home. I have been busy tending to a serious problem one of my toads has been suffering with and have expensive vet bills. Once I get some of the bills down I can begin saving for this terrarium. They will have the 36x18x24 Exo Terra Terrarium which is the same size as the Dumpy Family just different dimensions. I will be purchasing a Biopod for my Gray Tree Frogs and if I am impressed by it then I may eventually give the Skink Dynasty a Biopod. But for now they are looking forward to an Exo Terra Terrarium. So Skink Dynasty may be welcoming in some new inhabitants. I'll leave that out for now. The Skink Dynasty is going to become a feature enclosure once completed and will complete the exotics side of the PA Woods Vivariums! Coming soon! Maybe we can have an update on the Five Lined Dumpy Family soon. What do you think?

The Rise of the Skink Dynasty!

This week welcomed the enclosure for the Skink Dynasty and it has been getting built throughout the week. I caught over half of the inhabitants. Pharaoh the male skink, a millipede, the snails and their offspring and Florence the Squirrel Tree Frog. I am still looking for more millipedes and the female skinks. I am pleased to say a lot of the build is finished and you will be able to observe the animals more so we will be able to actually document the Skink Dynasty and their civilization. I will actually be looking into getting a pyramid and some decorations for them to give you the theme of Pharaoh being the leader and paying him and his family homage.

The Skink Dynasty will be a feature in the new video coming out which will talk about just about all of the channel!

The Dumpy Family has been doing well. They are operating usual which is good because I haven't had as much luck lately with animals being normal.

So I am considering a few more inhabitants to the Skink Dynasty but I'm not sure just yet. I am excited to finally feature them and to show you how cool this ecosystem is. This houses my Autumn Brilliance Fern which is going on 5 years old in captivity. It's the center of the Skink Dynasty. It represents mother Earth. It's massive! I am very excited to finally give the exotic side of the channel more coverage. Maybe we will see Chi Chi the Chinchilla and Lolita the Bunny make an appearance.

Many people wanted to see a Southern Woods and I have not designated where it comes from but it is indeed my take on a southern woods. It's more focused around the east coast between North Carolina through Georgia. The Skinks come from the southern coast and so does the squirrel tree frog. The one I caught was 800 yards from the ocean! So they overlap!

What do you want to see? I'm pretty sure nobody has documented Southeastern Five Lined Skinks or Squirrel Tree Frogs eating or in a vivarium so this can be a breakthrough for people looking to see how to keep both species. I am excited to hopefully tap into these audiences. Both species are overlooked and are very interesting in their own right.

Do you want me to try and catch them eating?

What are you looking forward to seeing the most with a now unified Five Lined Dumpy Family?

Do you want to see the Gray Army join the exotic side of the channel?

What are you looking forward to hearing in the next video?

Default Re: My Five Lined Dumpy Family!

The Skink Dynasty is on the horizon...

There is still some work to finish on the Skink of but it is very habitable and is more of a nocturnal setup because Pharaoh is no where to be seen. The other Skinks aren't in yet and the Snails and Squirrel Tree Frog are out and about. I haven't seen the Millipede yet either. I am looking forward to bringing this habitat to the channel because these animals deserve it waiting this long and I am very excited to include the only reptiles and inverts into the channel more consistent. Remember you haven't seen them since I had 50 subscribers so it's been months!

I'm hoping to get the Skinks all into the setup. We will have to see if all 3 are still in the enclosure because they had escaped before and I believed I caught them. We will see though. I'm hoping to find d them and Millipedes.

If not the reign of the Skink Dynasty may be coming to an end. What could claim the throne? Let's hope nothing for a long time! But perhaps something else southern that overlaps with the Skinks and Squirrel Tree Frogs. Just a thought

What would be an invert that would be fun possibly to include in this setup?

After the update video should we try to make a video featuring The unified Five Lined Dumpy Family? Or just a stand alone of one of them?

So I have come to a conclusion on including both sides of the channel in with some videos like the Swarms Battles. So there will be battles this year the Five Lined Dumpy Family will face but when it features the native species some battles will have two parts and the exotic animals will have a chance to battle and defend their home lands. No enclosure is safe in the Swarms Battles. What feeder do you want to see the Five Lined Dumpy Family battle?

Default Re: My Five Lined Dumpy Family!

And so the war in the hallway begins!

So the Dumpy Family has claimed the hallway with their kingdom. The two male tree frogs croak at nights and sometimes during the day. They had been the only enclosure in the hallway until the kingdom of the Skink Dynasty had appeared. Now the members of the Skink Dynasty are Skinks, Snails, Millipedes and last but not least a Squirrel Tree Frog. The little Squirrel Tree Frog hasn't made much of a peep in months but I found out just after about a week of him being in the hallway that he's going to make his presence known. When the Dumpy Family began calling again just seconds after they were challenged by Florence the Squirrel Tree Frog. He apparently responded to them which I was surprised by. So we have 3 tree frogs in the hallway that are making noise. It's going to be very interesting when I move the kingdoms even closer together. That may be noisy. Now the best part is that my Gray Tree Frogs also make noise and call during the early morning. So they may begin answering the Dumpy Family and Florence. So we may have a very noisy hallway for a while.

The Skink Dynasty is doing really well and I have nothing but good news seeing how much better the animals are doing. The next video the update will include the new Skink Dynasty.

So I have been able to actually come up with the first few video series for the Five Lined Dumpy Family.

Kingdoms will be the main video series and like how I will be releasing for my native species Frog Week, I am going to have more of a pets and exotics week to even it out. The update video is coming soon!

What do you think of the Tree Frogs going back and forth with one another?

Are you excited to see the Skinks for the first time?

Are you looking forward to hearing more about Kingdoms?

Default Five Lined Dumpy Family 2019

This is the thread for the Five Lined Dumpy Family my White's Tree Frogs and Southeastern Five Lined Skinks. We will talk about their enclosures, diets and any news regarding them.

About the Dumpy Family:

Three White's Tree Frogs
Max (Female)
Spurgeon and Jeremiah (Males)
Fin (Male Betta Fish)

About the Skink Dynasty:

Pharaoh (Male Skink)
Amsi (Female Skink)
Ruby (Offspring)
Florence (Male Squirrel Tree Frog)
Large Virginia Land Snails
Large North American Millipedes

Both enclosures are 67 Gallon Exo Terra Terrariums

The Dumpy Family live in the 24x18x36
The Skink Dynasty live in the 36x18x24

The Dumpy Family is scaped after Asia and Australia Hybrid Forest Paludarium

The Skink Dynasty is scaped after the Southeastern United States. Carolina's to Northern Florida.

Both enclosures are together for me because they are side by side literally and are my only exotic animals. So I decided to include them together.

The leaders of the Five Lined Dumpy Family are Max and Pharaoh. It will be interesting to see how big Max gets. Both animals control the ecosystems respectively. Pharaoh can accept or reject an organism and kill or eat it. He chooses which is how the Squirrel Tree Frog, Snails and Millipedes are in the Skink Dynasty. If Pharaoh wanted to he would kill or eat everything else. Everything essentially works for the Skinks. The Snails eat decaying plant matter as do the Millipedes but the Millipedes eat poop of the lizards. So they clean up the enclosure. The Squirrel Tree Frog is night shift security because he consumes any small insects that could potentially bother the Skinks while they sleep. Max controls her environment because she eats as much as she wants. She is dominant and will pester the males if they take her food. She's not always aggressive to them. I find Spurgeon sitting with her late at night. Max has eaten fish before and attempted to hunt Fin once but could not get him as Fin was too deep and in the center of the water so Max could not get any footing. She ate Minnows before and assuming she got a good shot she would attempt the Betta Fish. Fin is the king of the waters. While Max may be a threat it's not usual for her and Fin to interact. They have actually lived together almost a year and only become aware of each other once. That's not bad. Fin controls the water because any fish introduced he fought and it was immediately removed. This is a little bit on the leaders of the Five Lined Dumpy Family.

We will be displaying Kingdoms which will show daily life for these animals and how the leaders maintain their control of their ecosystems.

To see the Skink Dynasty being built check this out!
