Default Need some info on red eyed eyed tree frogs.

So I have been wanting to get red eyed tree frogs for a while now, and I am planning on sarting a tank for them. One concern I have is them calling all night. What would thier call be comparable to based on how loud it is?

I had red eyes for many years. There call is probably one of the loudest i have heard. Im sorry though i dont have much to compare it to. I will tell you that besides there call the thing that annoyed me most was the constant cricket noise i heard. I actually enjoyed the call of my frogs. It made me feel as if i had given them a good home and they were comfortable enough in it. If you do plan on putting real plants in with them make sure they are strong and have broad leaves. I learned the hard way they will trounce and crush your plants.

goodluck

The call and the fact they are only active at night where the reasons i finially after 5+years stopped breeding and keeping them.

I don't mind the call, but would agree being only active at night has made me want to get rid of mine, watching them sleep is not fun.

Most i would say. I haven't heard a lot of calling from many different frogs. I would say they rival my leucs and are way louder then any imitator i have heard. I had the RETF they lived in the living room and i could hear them all the way across my apt and in my own bedroom. Do some youtube searches for there call. Then imagine that at night pretty loude

Okay thanks. Is there any way to limit calling, while still making the frogs happy?

You could get only females(they don't 'call').

But honestly, they're a gorgeous animal. Have wonderful behavior. And I personally love their call. As suggested, hit up youtube for some examples of their nocturnal activity. You may find a truly spectacular specimen to appreciate.

Getting only females sounds like a good option. Is there a reliable way to tell if they are male or female?

Mike Novy of rainforestjunky's breeds them regularly. You may want to email him or give him a call.

His site - Rain Forest Junky's
His email - [email protected]
His number - (216)965-2856

Very knowledgeable, very friendly, very cool guy! Generally speaking, the females will be bigger in size than the males. Pushing close to 3", whereas males are closer to 2 - 2.5" if I'm not mistaken.

Hope that helps and good luck!

Thanks for all the help. I am not sure if they will be the right frog for me becuase of them being nocturnal and calling, but we'll see.
