Plants for a 24"x12"x12" vivarium

Hi everyone, what plants would you recommend for a 24"x12"x12" (15 gallon) vivarium? I'm planning to put a pair of D. auratus "microspot" in the vivarium and was wondering what plants would do best.

Thanks

Hello 🙂 There’s a lot to consider when selecting vivarium plants:

What kind of lighting do you plan on using?
-high light loving plants vs low light plants. Darts like it on the shady side so if the lighting is high, they’ll appreciate lots of overgrowth, big leaves.
-Moss likes very bright light and constant moisture
-Ferns and orchids appreciate air flow
-tillandsias (air plants) with fuzzy leaves will most likely rot in a viv without air flow. Smooth leaved air plants like pink quill can do well, though pink quill will eventually outgrow your tank.

Are you doing a planted background? Cascading plants like Peperomias would do well.

Choice of substrate? Some plants like constant wet feet, some like to dry out.

Because of the smaller space, try to avoid fast growing vines or plants that like to take over everything: Ficus vines, hydrocotyle, begonias, wandering Jew, most tropical houseplants you find at Home Depot or Lowe’s. Constant pruning of the foliage can stress animals and yourself.

Philodendrons and pothos are on the fence for me...while they can grow somewhat fast, they offer larger leaves for the frogs to hide in and really give it that tropical look. Smaller aroids would do well in your tank as well.

Here’s a very short list of easy plants for a smaller viv that I can think of right now:

Peperomias...lots to choose from
Pilea glauca
Rabbit foot ferns
Microgramma ferns
Heart fern
Button ferns
Saliginella krausiana makes a good ground cover
Marcgravia
Fittonia
Small bromeliads
Cryptanthus
A medium sized Bromeliad would make a great focal point.
Muehlenbeckia complexa
Anubias and Bucephelandra are sold as aquatic plants but do well in humid vivs.
Cryptocorn, if the substrate stays moist
Episcia ‘silver skies”, if there’s good air flow
Pleurothalis grobyi is a super easy mini orchid
