Default Plants

I have a 12x12x18 Zoo Med Tank and I am wondering what plants would be good to put in there. Will the plants grow in aquarium gravel with coconut fiber bedding? Thanks

pothos and creeping fig are two plants that seem to do well just about anywhere and you would probably have to try to kill them IME. Others will probably add to the list. Good luck.

There is a pretty comprehensive list of suitable plants at joshsfrogs.com

It is more a matter of final size than anything else. If you pick a tropical plant that wants to stay reasonably moist (anything from a moist jungle environment), it is probably suited to growing in a viv. The plants will grow in virtually any substrate you use. Some plants might prefer to be mounted on cork or wood.

You can spend as much as you have on different kinds of lights... I use cheap fluorescents. A compact spiral (as bright as you can afford) in a cheap clip on light fixture (6 bucks at the mega-mart), face down resting right on top of the tank. Or if I have a couple tanks side by side I will use a shop light with two tubes, again just sitting on top of the tank.

Last batch of shoplights I bought were from WalMart (or MallWart, as I usually call them). T8 fixtures for $8.32 each. That is a really good price on T8 fixtures... I've been buying a pretty pricey (for me) 4' tube, they are Phillips brand, can't remember the model but they are a high light output and long life (40,000 hours as opposed to ~20,000 for most) bulb. They are nice, but you have to get them in a 10 pack and that will set you back $33.00. If you'd rather, any old tube will work, you don't need to buy special 'plant lights'. I've grown orchids under fluorescent tubes for years, never needed anything but cheap tubes and they do fine.
