Default MOTYDesign LAMBO LEDs

Sorry Todd, i couldnt help my self after that last light update you posted

SO! i have talked LEDs on here the past two years with light parterns and wave lengths and all that junk. WELL! here is the action. this is my proto type 50W LED fixture. i wanted to see how much light i wanted so this is where i am with it so far.
the next step is to turn it into a clean fixture. from there well see what everyone thinks.

the tank used is painted black on all 3 sides. in real life with no led it was dark (little light coming in from the front but for all purposes it was blacked out in there)

LET THERE BE LIGHT!!!!!!!!!!(that is a 2 bulb 6' T5HO above the other tanks)

How much heat is there on them? Do you have a light meter? Any concern with that amount of light burning the plants?

Mike, all great questions, the heat was nothing, i plan on doing a heat generation cal. later when the fixure can be tested as a whole. the light is 4500 lumens at the source. its intended design will be for a little bit bigger of a tank. if i were doing this single 29 vert id probably do it with only 30watts or 2700 lumens. also looking into dimmable ballasts.

Looking good! Does it sit directly on the heat sinks, or do those go towards the back?

When I did my DIY LED I learned that U channels are better as heatsinks than square tubes. Unless you are not using the square tube as heatsink...

You can get Intel heatsinks on ebay for $3 each with shipping if you buy in bulk. They are much better than the plain aluminum kind

as you can probably tell im waiting on more internal components, however while waiting and building a custom tank for a new hobbiest im working on the fixture that will be powering it, its going to be a 20 or maybe 30 watt system still figuring it out. however i am quite proud of the over all feel of the fixture.

my bet is you wont need to run a fan for those heatsinks. im thinking my next led build will have individual heatsinks so i can adjust the angles to get more even lighting.

yeah thats the plan these will be slightly under driven LEDs keeping heat low and not needing fans or such.

I'm also currently building a diy led system. I'm using the same 3 watt cree's that you went with, but am having trouble deciding on how many I should use over each tank, how many individual led's for instance are you using over this tank?

Thanks in advance.

Awesome thanks for that, I'm not sure why I thought you were using the 3 watt ones, must have been from another thread. I have been reading so many of them they are starting to blend together. haha

heres the final product on the 29 vert. its a 30watt system zero tank temp increase from lights (stays at room temp)

the light you see around is from the LED output. no other lights are on in the room and no windows.
