Default 75W Exo-Terra Moonlight Lamp + 20g Vert = Cracked Glass

Ugh. I got a 75w exo moonlight lamp to put on a 20g vert for a pair of H. valerioi I ordered from UE, and after 5 minutes of running I heard a loud popping noise. I go check out the tank, and try to pick up the lamp but it's so hot that it burns my hand. I pick it up by the cord, and apparently it got so hot that it cracked the glass on my tank. This all happened last night, and the crack has almost tripled in size since then. I guess my questions are:
Is this normal or was the light/tank defective?
Is it safe to put anything in this tank? I plan on redoing it eventually, but I'm not made out of money. If not I'll have to ghetto rig a temporary tank in the meantime.

I am so unbelievably annoyed right now

I am sorry to hear that!
Are you sure the bulb is a 75 watt, I don't mean that it was your fault, but a 75w shouldn't get that hot. At least I don't think they get hot enough to crack glass, I'm not sure.

Yea, I just checked the box to be sure. It is 75w.

If you have the lamp in a dome and set it on the glass it will absolutely crack the glass. Heat builds up in the dome if it doesn't have space to vent. Years ago i built a 75g vert for some geckos. I had the heat lamp mounted on the side shining in through the screen and i took the side off i just set the lamp on top for a minute not thinking and it broke the glass. That was a 50w basking.

I wish I had thought of that before I did it...

Is it safe to have frogs in the enclosure temporarily until I can fix/replace it?

They're incandescent heat lamps. I've temp gunned mine and gotten surface temperature readings upwards of 3-400 degrees. Generally, people use them on metal screen tops rated for heat lamps.
