Well it's just what the guy told me, it was in his catalog, it was two 4qt packs similar size I'd imagine to the coco fiber and forest moss which are also both 4qt I believe. I had to go for 24qt though it's only like $20 and I'll need about 2+ gallons of it for my tank.

Also, what kind of charcoal do I use? It's not just regular charcoal at menards or something is it?

if its the exoterra fern then its good stuff. It also works for backgrounds. As for charcoal, they sell it in garden shops.

If you search orchid potting supplies, you'll hit a lot of sites that sell it as well as the charcoal....

Thanks Ed but I can grab it at home depot I believe.

The comment says its more of a mulch. Will that still work? Or should I just break it up? It's only $5 and if it works I'll be fine breaking it up myself. Same with the charcoal just need to know what kind to get. I think I saw a hardwood one at homedepot/ menards

Orchid Bark-5019 at The Home Depot

At my local Lowes, that tends to be bags of "medium" fir bark; chips maybe 1/2" or so and up. If you have any local nurseries that specialize in orchids, you can usually find larger bags in various grades, from fine to large if that's not the size you want.

For charcoal, you can buy bags of hardwood natural lump charcoal (for grilling), and break it up to pieces the size you want (putting it in an old pillowcase and hitting it with a hammer works well), or smaller bags of horticultural charcoal (already in small pieces) in the garden center; the lump charcoal for grilling is cheaper by volume, but you have to break it up yourself.

This second part of your post is exactly why I suggested looking on line... you would have the information in your hands and not be second guessing whether or not it is a suitable substrate ingredient.....

Or you could simply purchase premade ABG mix right from some of the sponsors which would help support this forum as well as those who supply the other things we can use in the hobby instead of a big box store.......

I need about 10 gallons and to buy it from joshs at $11 a gallon is way too much. I don't have $120 to spend right now but can manage to spend the 40-50 for it in a much larger amount. Besides I'll be needing much more anyways when I set up my 200. I don't mind supporting the small guys but web it'll cost me over double it's just not worth it
