Default Hinges

I did a search but didn't get pertinent results. What type of hinges have you used for DIY doors for a converted aquarium?

Should I remove the top lip for the conversion?

I have also used the plastic hinges, but I tried a silicone hinge on the last vert that I made. It's holding up well, and doesn't look too bad.
I just used some painters tape and silicone to make it.

Many people use what are called living hinges or piano hinges. Joshes frogs sells them.

has anyone had any problems/ tips/ or tricks with either type of hinge? What do you use to secure them to glass?

Built 50-60 vivs with the style I linked you too in the last 8-9 years and never had a failure. I like to drill two or three , 3/16 to 1/4" holes in each hinge half for extra "grabbing power". I glue them on with 100 percent silicone.

Doug, thanks for the heads up. 50 is quite a body of work! How many are still in the viv wing of your home?! Do you drill all of the way thru or only partially? Do you haver a rule of 1/ foot? What do you use as a clasp?

For a while I was in over my head, running a coral farm, frog farm, and a window company, while still trying to be an involved dad. Wife wouldn't let me get rid of the kids so the frogs had to go for a while. Guy that bought my stuff is still using most of the vivs. I think he cracked one of them.
10 more are in use in my basement. Afraid I don't use a clasp as mine are slope fronts so gravity holds the lids shut. I do drill all the way through the hinges. I put two on a 12 inch lid and three on a 24 inch lid.
