Default My first Vertical 10 Attempts!

Here are my two verical 10 gallons that I just made. I actually have a third one ready to be planted as I am typing this. It will fit right in next to the other two. Instead of going with normal latches, my doors are held closed magnetically. Excuse the pictures, my camera isn't that great. It really does't show the vivs off well. The first pic shows a few other vivs. The top 33gal has been recently planted with some more plants on the way for mounting to the coco background. I chose a more natural route with this one. Rather than using "great stuff" for a background. I found that building these 10 gallon vertical vivs was very easy and fun! Found everything I needed at the local Lowe's. I live in a location that has about 3 lowes within a 10 mile radius. Let me know what you guys think about my first verts!

Its actually just a standard aquarium hood light strip. I removed it from a 30 gallon hood. It is just big enough to fit over 3 vertical 10's. It also fits within a few 16th's of an inch in between the shelf and the tanks. It looks like it's built into the shelf when you have all three tanks setting in there. The bulb is an repti-glo 2.0 that I had setting around. It is actually much cooler to the touch than my other standard aquarium lights. The UVA and UVB rays aren't strong enough for a reptile but should bring out some nice plant growth in the vivs.

Can you show more of how you made the fronts for the 10g's? I assume they are glass fronts.

Looks great. How did you do the magnet latch? I've been pondering on how to do the same thing but couldn't figure out a good way to do it aesthetically like you have.

I want to set up a few 10g verts as soon as I get settled in to a new place. Im very interested in the magnetic doors and how you did the fronts of yours as well.

What do you plan to put in them when they are ready?

I will post pictures tomorrow. I'm getting ready to install some on the third tank. I just picked up a couple of small magnetic cabinet latches from lowes. They were very slinder and dark brown. I mounted them right behind the black frame around the front of the tank so they are out of sight and then mounted the metal pieces on the door corners. So that when the door is close to being shut the magnets pull it in tight and hold it there.

If you're able to could you post some close-up pictures of the magnetic latches. Thanks.

Just got done taking some pictures of the latches. Must have read your mind. I cropped them so they wouldn't take as long to load up. The new viv still looks rough. None of the silicone has been trimmed yet.

I go to lowes and get a 5 x 9.75" sheet of glass (bottom) and a 12 x 9.75" sheet (door). This will leave about a 2.5" gap at the top for a screen vent. They can cut it from the same piece of glass and it costs roughly around $3.80. Then I bought black screen frame. It comes in one long strip, enough to make 3 or 4 verts.(about $6.00) Then I get the screen frame corners. (around $2.00) They will have to be trimmed a little shorter to fit. Then I get the continuous hinge. Its about roughly 3ft. You cut it to fit. It will make 3 verts. ($7.00) I had the screen laying around the house. I just used the black fiberglass screen I had and triple layered it to make sure no fruit flies escape easily. I bought the door handle from home depot for about $2.79. I used DAP aquarium silicone ($3.88) for almost all of the project accept for securing the actual magnets to the glass and tacking the corners of the screen to the frame before it was siliconed in. For that I used hot glue. It seemed at first it would not adhere to the glass very well, but I made a mistake on one of the magnets and I had to cut around it with a razor blade then pry it off with a screw driver! So it has held up pretty well.

I hope all this has made sense. I have been up drinking all night and I decided to go ahead and post this for everyone that asked....
