Default mold/mildew smell

does mildew or mold in a vivarium have a smell to it? the viv i recently planted has some mold in it and smells kind of wierd. its not like a chemical smell though (i.e. uncured silicone). its more of an earthy smell.

In my experience, my tanks smell like a musty basement for a while. Once they get established, and the microflora/fauna gets established, it starts to smell like a forest after a rainstorm. I'd say what you're smelling is normal and give it time. If it smells repulsive, acrid, rotten, etc, that would be a concern.

Hope that helps!

Hey buddy, All tanks go throught a mold phase, i still get some in my tank thats been up and running since early summer. So I wouldn't worry about it. Earthy is a good smell to have. Frogs will be happy as long as they are wet and have food

I keep a lot of tanks about the house and I have found that basic HEPA filter put near a tank will help cut down any smell. I have a seriously strong sense of smell, more a curse than blessing really, and so even a well establshed tank can make the place smell funky if something dies/air pocket bubbles up. Its amaizing how the tinyest amount of H2S will smell up the place.

Walmart carrys for like 25 bucks a basic HEPA filter. They are efficient enough to pull smoke out of the air and can take care of even the most impressive smells.

Plus they help pull out dust/gunk out of your air. Indoor air pollution in most houses is higher than most people think...
