Default My First Post....My first Build

I made such a mess, everything looked horrible. I almost gave up but I'm glad I finished it. Hoping to add a dart in here at some point. (will update with the dirty construction pictures in a bit)

Looks good but you might want to add some leaf litter, but other than that it's awesome! The plant selection is really good.

Hoping to add some gravel for the pond area, leaf litter, riccia moss, and a dart. I also picked up the plants from Mike at Neherptoculture. I'm glad that I did because after visiting the local plant store, it was more expensive and most everything looked dry and dying.

Parts I picked up from doc smith

Laying in the coco into the foam. My rookie mistake was not knowing how much the foam rises after laying

Trying to add depth to the background

This sorta looked cavernous to me... was purely accidental

Birds Eye View

The mini Broms (my fave)

Frosty Fern

W/Flash showing the substrate layers

Alas

Yes it is... ( They are classified as Miniature Neoregelias, not sure if they are actually broms? Although they just look like mini ones to me)

I use a pretty heavy amount of jungle mix in my vivs. I mix it with some coco fiber, but I really like it. It drains well and holds up well.

exactly...mixed with cocofiber. I used this mix for the back ground also as well so it doesnt look completely brown. It has fir bark, spaghnum and peat moss mixed into it already.

Looks like it came out nicely! Love the wooden log 'bridge'.

What darts are you leaning toward?

Same here, I've been adding a few things to it to copy the ABG mix, but its a great substrate, I really like the look of it, and the springtails love it.

Springtails? I'm assuming that last post was meant for another thread? hehe as for darts... I'm not really sure. I'm leaning towards a starter frog which I think would be a Auratus or Azeurus? It'll depend on what a local breeder near me is holding at the time. It turns out Andy at brooklyndartfrogs.com live about 5 minutes from me. I'll def. stop by and hopefully get a chance to pick out a little guy instead of the usual internet ordering.

This is a 20 gallon tank which I think will be good for up to 2 darts, but the "pond" takes up a lot of real estate. I may shrink the pond area which is pretty useless but I'm thinking after I add some more gravel it'll turn into a awesome "Swimming Pool". Question though, If I just get one dart frog, do they get lonely? sad? depressed? Bored? Hell, I know I would be if I was all alone in a tank.

Are those Tillys and Broms in the soil?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

and springtails are lil microfauna that live in the leaf litter, they breed in the tank, and are a constantly renewing food source in the viv

The brom and tilly on the back right are attached to the background but fairly low. ( I think I can get away with it) However, I just did attach the tilly in the front to the back ground also. I hear they rot pretty easily if planted directly on substrate. (another noobie mistake, just like the mistake where I'm trying to get foam off my fingers when I forgot to put my gloves back on)

Depending on what frogs you're planning on putting in there you might need a lot more plants, and how are you planning to hold humidity in with the screen top?

I have plexiglass over it currently. However, I'm still trying to figure out how I can cut it to the size of the screen and then silicone it on(maybe a bit smaller to allow some air). Anyone have a good method of cutting plexi glass? I have a electric wood saw cutter but the blade is sorta thick.

Me too, I was just wondering what part he used it in =)

It's cheap and a nice mix. Works well with the concrete binder too, as it has small sticks in it that look really cool. If I could only get fresh binder.

How's the humidity doing ? Normally you don't see screen tops in dart frog enclosures.

Use a straight edge - just score it deep with a razor blade and crack it over the edge of a desk. (Not for thick plexi - but the average under 1/8" stuff)

I cut the Plexiglass in half using the "razor blade/then slam on the side of a table" technique. (Thanks Mike, it worked wonderfully). Right now I have only one side covered

The other side although isn't covered by plexi, my hood lamp covers most of it leaving just partial screen and the fold Slit.

From the left

From the right

Front shot. I moved the tilly and brom higher up the background wall. (better safe then sorry) I also added some black/silver gravel.

I hear darts can be quite escape artists. Will the Fold/slit area on my screen cover be small enough to keep the most nimble/agile/small dart frogs in? I can always run black electrical tape over it but I'm afraid there won't be enough ventilation

^^^ Ventilation isn't really necessary usually. I doubt a Tinctorious could get out that crack - but a little electrical tape to be safe isn't a bad idea... And it'll contain the flies a little better haha.

I'd def cover both sides of the screen lid w/plexi. You can drill holes and zip tie them to the lid - or use hot glue... Silicone doesn't stick well to plexi tho.

It's definitely coming together, for sure! It looks way better with the new layout.

I am close to picking out a pair of darts for this tank. My tank doesn't have much floor space so with that in mind, can someone recommend which can work? Much thanks!
