Default Glass top for exo Terra

Hi, I did a ton of research on the cleanest and best way to do a glass top on a exo Terra with a vent. I have not seen it done the way I was thinking so I figured I would share. I ended up doing a full glass top out of 1/4” glass and having a glass shop use a CNC machine to cut a 3”x13” slot in the glass. It ended up costing $109 but for me it was totally worth it. I used no see um mesh over the slot and hot glued the corners to make it tight. After it was tight I put a small bead of silicone around the screen. I also put a bead of silicone along the front because I didn’t want to mess with the cut outs from the door hinges. My computer fans sit on the glass and it looks really clean. I will see if I can post some pictures.

Default Glass top for exo Terra

I’m highly interested in seeing the final product. Was it 109$ for the glass plus CNC work or glass plus 109$ of CNC work? I was unaware you could CNC glass.

It was $109 for the glass and cnc work. It was 1/4 clear glass with all polished edges. I believe the can also use a water jet, but they said it was a cnc machine. It turned out great and seems very strong. I was a little worried about cutting the slot but it’s great. I can’t believe how hard it is to post a picture on here.

I definitely agree. If you have a smart phone I would suggest downloading tapatalk, very convenient for posting photos.

Here are some pictures. I could have done the screen a little less hangover.

Yes, it's done quite commonly on custom glass shower enclosures. Actually, I spent half my life doing glass, and in residential glass anyway, shower doors is about the only thing that might require CNC work. Pricing can vary greatly on CNC work. Most shops will have to cut the glass at their location, then send it out to have the CNC work done, then bring it back to their location to have it tempered.
Having edges sanded instead of polished is also an option that could save some money. It would still be smooth enough to be quite finger safe.

Even cheaper: just get the glass cut 3" shorter than you need. Then you can silicone some screen material across the back yourself and save a lot of money on getting glass cut!

I have tried that as well. But it does not look as clean and not easily removable. I have also left some space and built a window screen to fill the hole. But it allows for more fly escape and a lot more silicone.

This is my other tank. It works good and was only like $30 but had to use more silicone and I don’t think it looks as good.
