Default Air circulation question

I currently have 40mm fans with speed control in my 20 gallon verts. I have always put screen covers on them for safety. They are held to the top with magnets. My question is this. I donít ever see frogs on the top glass. Would it be safe to have the fans suspended without screen covers? I want to start getting a few orchids and the screen reduces the air flow quite a bit. I have used the search engine with no luck so far. Thanks in advance.

What kind of frogs do you have? Could you get a more powerful fan maybe or get a less fine mesh screen? I feel like taking the screen off is putting your frogs in harm's way, I wouldn't do it personally. There are probably people that have done this without incident for years but I personally wouldn't when you could work around the situation. Just because you've never seen your frogs in that location before, doesnt mean they never venture there

Imis will climb up there; I see mine on every surface in their viv.

This may not help when they raise froglets in there, but: could you put a more coarse mesh screen on the fans, one that won't slow the air as much but still is smaller than a frog? Maybe 10 mesh would allow air flow but even keep froglets safe.

Excellent. Update us when you get it done; I don't use fans myself, but I'm sure this is a common issue.

FWIW, I use something similar to the one that socratic monologue linked, but mine are plastic. I believe they're used for knitting and can be found for cheap at local fabric stores (or see the link below). I have noticed only minimal effect on the fan's output and I have the piece of mind knowing my frogs can't find their way into trouble

This looks perfect. How do you attach to the fan? Hot glue?

meh, from what I've experienced, fans are completely unnecessary. Frogs and plants will both do well in either a mostly sealed viv, or one with vents providing air exchange

Big difference in visibility for me w/fans vs w/o fans. The moisture on the glass would never go away before i had them.

I would agree. I have a viv I am working on now. That was why I asked the original question. There are no frogs in it yet but it is planted. When I took the guard off the fan, the glass cleared in a day. I will keep you all posted after I try the new mesh. It should be here tomorrow.

I used super glue on mine, but I suppose you could use hot glue if you'd prefer. Good luck with it!

hmm that's true. but vents at the front of the viv accomplish the same thing.

I actually have Sherman vents top and bottom. Still had condensation without the fans
