Default Benefits of using low iron glass (white glass) ?

Hey,

Are there any benefits of using low iron glass instead of normal float glass in Terrarium applications?

Thanks for your thoughts.

If there are any benefits they would only be marginal, and not worth the expense of low iron glass.

Some folks swear by the supposed clarity that they say is worth the cost. I've not experienced it, but I know the clarity of my vivs is usually limited by froggie footprints and the like, more than by the clarity of the glass.

Starphire is softer and thus scratches more easily. Maybe a problem, maybe not.

Starphire does, in fact, transmit UV very well. There is a lot of 'yes it does/no it doesn't' on forums, so here's a link to some data claims from the manufacturer:

I have used both on aquariums and the low iron glass is nicer but I fond it scratched quicker so you have to be more careful with it it all depends what you are after the low iron stuff is good but I don't consider it worth the cost you mainly notice it when looking from the side of the glass normal glass has a blueish greenish tint but low iron is clear but not by a massive amount as far as letting light wavelength through I am not too sure it is gonna make a massive difference hope this helps

Not worth the cost, especially considering you're only talking 1/4" thickness at most. For most applications you're talking about glass that is even thinner, 1/8" or so. In this case using low iron glass is arguably silly if you're budget conscious at all.

In my years of watching these discussions I find that those who say it's worth the cost already paid for it, so might as well go all in.

This comes from many years in the reef/aquarium hobby as well, and maintaining tanks built with both (not to mention acrylic which is optically clear)

I'd say the argument for it is much stronger with an aquarium, especially a large one where glass thickness is substantially higher.
