This is my first time making my own tanks from scratch, it took many sliced fingers and made my living room a mess for a couple days, but it was well worth it.

I siliconed egg crate to the back wall for extra support as the hardscape was going to be heavy. I then put the pieces of wood into position and foamed them into place. I carved out all the cracks in between the wood so that the foam was not visible but still holding up the wood, then I attached hygrolon in the bare spots and filled all the cracks in with sphagnum; like a cork mosaic.

I have something like 20 orchids in there, along with some marcgravia and epiphytic ferns. There is a small corner in the front that has only spaghnum and I have some bladderworts planted there. I can list the species if anyone is interested. The rest of the tank has a mix of bentonite and turface as a substrate. I am waiting on an order from ecuagenera for a few more hard to find plants and then I will just be waiting for it to grow in. I have the second tank in progress now.

Here's the second build. It's getting close, but is at a standstill for a couple of days until I get some more moss and my next plant shipment comes in

Get a flat, un-glazed tile. Or if you can't find one, get a tile with a fairly flat, un-glazed back. After you cut your glass, put the sheets in the bathtub with a couple of inches of water in it and submerge the glass. Use the tile like an emory board and run it (make sure the tile is wet too) along all cut edges. This will dull the edge and put an end to the cut fingers. I have a grinder, but the old ceramic "sanding" works just as well to dull edges. The grinder allows me to make nifty door handles and curvy stuff when I feel so inclined.
For a buck your fingers will thank you. Glass is gonna cut you- that's just its higher purpose.

Vivs look great!

They're both set up now, waiting on one more little shipment of plants

Look great. Nice backgrounds. how are you planning to drain them?

Llama 04-19-2019 03:30 AM

You can't see them, but they have false bottoms and there are hidden/covered pvc pipes to siphon water out when necessary.

If I may, what light fixture are you using?

@roguefish
I use green element evos and skylight rh's.
Here's an update on the two terrariums now that they're lush and grown in. Added some plants, took some out, and moved some around.

Looks great!! What is the glass thickness and where did you get the supplies?

Did you cut the glass yourself?

Llama 08-23-2019 05:04 PM

@Austin
It's 1/4" glass, I have a friend locally who cuts glass, I get it from him.

What about the track and screen?

Llama 08-23-2019 10:20 PM

Outwater plastics as it's near me for the track and frames and the screen is just doubled up fabric netting. Nothing too fancy mate 👍

Nice work! I always like the look of twin enclosures when they're set up and done.

I always want to make some tanks, yours look really nice. I would love to be able to customize the tank size for 24 of depth. But it ends up being fairly expensive to do so by time I order all of the materials. So, I always end up with ExoTerra which I have had a very good experience with. But still would love to build some tanks.

Nice job!

Looks awesome. Coukd you post a few more detail shots of the door? It looks like a sliding door but I don't see a gap in the middle. How does it open?

Llama 09-28-2019 10:09 PM

A new cryptanthus and some shots of the tanks' inhabitants. To the member who asked, the doors are just normal sliding track doors. Two pieces of glass that overlap in the middle and slide within two little plastic ridges.
