First I should mention that I abandoned my early ideas of making fake rock etc for the background when I realized that it would all be covered with plant growth in 18 months or so.

So do yourself a favor and keep this in mind when considering time and resources going into background items.

As far as foam goes, when I was planning on making fake rock, I had purchased a few of the pink foam insulation panels from Home Depot.
It's rigid enough, just hard/soft enough to hold form but also carve well.

I ended up using the typical spray foam covered with coconut fiber, with a few actual rocks (flat ones - which again will be covered anyway, one of them already is)

Don't use foam for branches...use actual wood or if you must fabricate them for some reason do a search on this subject. You'll find a few solutions.

One of the reasons (besides not being very creative ) that I used the cork tile panels is for the exact reason that JimM mentioned. After 6 months or a year it will be nearly covered by plants and moss.
